Google “ai” search claims 18 inches, but I checked the sources it cites and none of them actually have that info 😅

Not sure. I cannot find / have not seen the exact floor height of those. Just that they are “low floor”.

The states don’t want to spend the money either, so they are trying to figure out a short cut that is cheaper. Ultimately I don’t believe that battery trains will ever be a sub for full electrification on busy lines. They can replace diesel on low traffic lines. But that may be it.

Yes, broadly it is a huge problem that we can’t get the money committed for electrification projects in this country 😭

We will find out soon in Chicago. Think they will be in service late next year or early 28

Is there a good reason why they ordered some bespoke bi-levels instead of something based on the flirt (like was done by Metra in Chicago)? That seems like it is unnecessarily driving up cost and complexity, but I may be missing something as to a good reason why.

They work in Germany. But even winters in Kiel aren’t as severe as those in the North East 😅. The battery trains ordered by Metra for Chicago have 3x the battery capacity as the German version.

Yes, it is definitely a step in the right direction for better accessibility (even if it’s not 100% ideal)

Eric the Red @realeric4real.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
That would actually be good. But no, they just want nothing to be built. They are NIMBYs

They do have wheel chair ramps - but right, those aren’t ideal vs true level boarding

Eric the Red @realeric4real.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Yeah, much closer. Gallery cars have a 51 inch floor.
170
Eric the Red @realeric4real.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
I don’t think it would be. Unless with a 24 inch platform (the floor height is 24 inches). The standard low level platform is only 8 inches.

“The contract includes a $154 million base order for 8 two-car, battery-powered trainsets. The option worth $181.4 million is for eight more trainsets and up to 32 trailer cars, which could be added to the two-car trainsets to create three- or four-car trainsets.” railmarket.com/news/passeng...

Chicago commuter rail service Metra will buy up to 16 Stadler FLIRT battery trains.

The base configuration is a 2 car unit. But, if they pick up the option in their order, will have extra cars and can reconfigure as 3 or 4 car units.

No federal money used in this either. So that probably lowers the soft cost. Fewer requirements to comply with. gov-pritzker-newsroom.prezly.com/gov-pritzker...

If we could build a tram like this for $30M a mile in Chicago I would say let’s go nuts. Ashland, Western, Halsted, 79th, etc But of course you would have a lot more stations than one per 5 miles. Like at least 10. And I imagine the city would demand gold plated utility betterments.

Eric the Red @realeric4real.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Probably very little in the way of land acquisition or utility relocation costs given seems to be built through mostly vacant land. At grade with only one station.

“Exclusion over inclusion” is basically a bedrock Republican principle. Pretty funny to see it take Durkin until 2026 to figure this out. If even. He seems to maybe still be in the “no true Scotsman” phase.

Old man Daley was gone in 76. By the time Daley II came into power, Royko was firmly in his “old man yells at cloud” era. Been a while since I read his stuff, but this seems to match my recollection that his stuff from the 60’s and early 70’s is good. Not so much after that 😅

Maybe this is wrong, but article claims they are on the roof: “the batteries are carried in roof-mounted sections so they don’t reduce passenger capacity.” www.trains.com/pro/mechanic...

First of many battery trains enter service in Germany - Trains
KIEL, Germany —  The first of what will be multiple fleets of new battery-electric multiple-unit, or BEMU, trainsets have entered passenger service in northern Germany. The Stadler-built, two-car FLIRT trains debuted two weeks ago. They are designed to replace diesel multiple units and operate as regular electric trains when running on electrified lines. Each of [...]Read More...

Got it, thank you. So either need the curbs to be 3+ft wide or have bollards dense enough to prevent open car doors from intruding into the bike lane.

Eric the Red @realeric4real.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
If it’s where I’m thinking then it’s more buffered than protected. And the buffer isn’t wide enough. Occasional flexi posts. Even if they weren’t mostly gone from being mowed down, which they are, they are spaced too far apart to prevent dooring in many places.
120
Eric the Red @realeric4real.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Right. The people who want us to put up with this are the traffic engineers and various other car brains who refuse to build proper bike infrastructure separate from car traffic and pedestrians

Which lines? I assume they could apply for and get an exclusion from NEPA for an electrification project, but right, could be an issue!
110
Eric the Red @realeric4real.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Metra have no excuse not to pursue funding for electrification of the Rock Island. They could then redeploy these on lines owned by the class I’s where they may be blocked from putting up wires.
120
Eric the Red @realeric4real.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
It also looks like the German version has the batteries mounted on the roof, rather than in a “pod” between the cars like the Metra version.

Eric the Red @realeric4real.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Metra is already pretending this - so that’s fun.

Eric the Red @realeric4real.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Based on promotional materials from Metra and Stadler, it will charge the batteries via a pantograph. Idk if just the rendering or if it will be some kind of overhead contact rail as shown.
