Before Brecknockshire was a county, there was the ancient Welsh kingdom of Brycheiniog. In the sixteenth century, the ancient Welsh cantrefs of Brycheiniog, Builth and Hay were drawn together as the County of Brecknock - shaped by the Wye and Usk, and enclosed by the Beacons and Black Mountains.
