Carl Allen @realcarlallen.bsky.social · 05/10/2026A lot of talk about the polls being wrong in Brazil's election Where? 000
Carl Allen @realcarlallen.bsky.social · 03/10/2026The poll averages in Minnesota show the Democrat with a very small lead Yet, prediction markets give the Democrat a 90% chance to win How could a lead so small translate to such a large win probability?! My work on poll data explains why and how The Nate Silver et al framework literally cannot 121
Carl Allen @realcarlallen.bsky.social · 03/10/2026Can someone explain to be how this race wasn't rigged? Every single snapshot had the US losing. But they ended up winning easily. Either the race was rigged or the photographers really messed this up. This post is about poll data. 000
Carl Allen @realcarlallen.bsky.social · 02/10/2026The direction of photographer error in recent years *2000: huge US bias (photo 1) *2004: US bias *2008: anti-US bias *2012: unbiased *2016: anti-US bias *2020: unbiased *2024: US bias This is precisely the same logic used by @natesilver538bot.bsky.social when he says "poll error" 100
Carl Allen @realcarlallen.bsky.social · 02/10/2026For those who have trouble wrapping your minds around what "poll error" means - and what it doesn't mean - a simple question: Who does this snapshot predict will win the race, and by how much? If the woman in red (2nd place) eventually wins, does that mean the snapshot was wrong? Why or why not? 010
Carl Allen @realcarlallen.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Democrats polling very well, with a bunch of disgruntled conservatives hiding out as undecided...and ignorant analysts assuming undecideds will split evenly. Where have we seen this before? What could go wrong? 011
Carl Allen @realcarlallen.bsky.social · 30/09/2026If you ask people what they want, they lie. Not because they are being deceptive, but because they don't know. The flaw in poll data is not the data, but how we treat it. 101

Carl Allen @realcarlallen.bsky.social · 19/09/2026When we say something is "wrong" it has a very specific meaning. The way commentators like Silver, Morris, et al And media talk about poll data They are operating under an objectively, empirically incorrect definition of what it means for a poll to be "wrong" An analogy below 140
Carl Allen @realcarlallen.bsky.social · 17/09/2026Imagine you're working, and you ask me: "What's the score of the football game?" And I say "Panthers are up by 7" Then when you're off work, you check the score: Bears won by 22. Would it be accurate to say I was "way off"? Or that my report "up by 7" badly "missed the result"? Why or why not? 140

Carl Allen @realcarlallen.bsky.social · 12/09/2026The fact that most people misunderstand polls is not their fault: people they trust as experts don't understand them either Step one: Stop making the seemingly innocent but ultimately indefensible assumption that undecideds will always split evenly "or else the poll was wrong" 100

Carl Allen @realcarlallen.bsky.social · 29/08/2026A very basic explanation as to why the "margin" or "lead" someone has in a poll is a very misleading statistic If I say someone is "up by 7" in a poll - that sounds strong If the "margin of error" is +/- 3%, you might (wrongly) believe that - if the poll is accurate - the person ahead will win... 111
Carl Allen @realcarlallen.bsky.social · 24/08/2026"Um, Carl, you buried the lede.. You backtested Silver's models from when 538 was considered gold standard, figured out how he used last election's "poll miss" to fudge their tails based on the fact that you noticed they mistakenly showed Maine as -3 for Clinton instead of +3 in 2016...that's sick" 110

Carl Allen @realcarlallen.bsky.social · 14/08/2026Imagine I ask you what the score of the Lakers game is. And you say "Lakers are up by 10" That is not NEARLY enough information to form a narrow expectation of what the final score will be, if the Lakers are favored to win. Now apply that to how we analyze poll data, and you're top 0.01% 030
