I will always make fun of manga/anime that are overly descriptive of the experience of eating food for no apparent reason other than to pad time and let the author expense a fancy dinner. But also. Doing a really good job of it? A show of mastery on par with shooting your armor with a rifle

You think action scenes are hard to write. You think sex scenes are hard to write. You think truly gripping, heart-rending, emotional confessions are hard to write. Wrong. All wrong. What's hard to write is the experience of eating an oatmeal breakfast bar.

Watching Terminator and a commercial for an AI agent comes on, like, 2 minutes apart from the bit where they explain the machines taking over. Read the room, algorithm.

A realis mood is the grammatical form indicating truth: The fire is dying. An irrealis mood would instead indicate any other possibility. The fire might not die. The fire must not die. Let not the fire die. Pyrrealis, then, is what flint speaks to tinder. emilyzhu.itch.io/pyrrealis

Going to defeat adblockers with my new advertising method where instead of a micro-auction algorithm loading up 1,000 times per webpage it's just a static banner space rented through an advertising agreement on the backend and a clickthrough affiliate link. I call it "We Figured This out in the 80s"

My new go-to whenever somebody is telling a story in which I do not get the feeling they were at their best but I think it would be inopportune or unhelpful to point this out, I'm just gonna hit them with "I sense you carry many burdens." Give 'em the ol' wise hermit.

15 years ago when Apocalypse World was new and people were beginning to understand and work with it, it was seductive to look at "acting under fire" and see, not one basic move of several, but the template underlying all the game's moves. Like @kierongillen.bsky.social 's classic gag:

Spoilers for a 50-year-old TV show I guess. I was aware that Zeon had basis in Nazi Germany but the name drop was unexpected.

Me watching Mobile Suit Gundam: "Interesting how Zeon's imagery is evocative of Nazi Germany. Seems like a use of visual cues to direct the viewer's bias." Zeon politician: "I am an adherent of Adolf Hitler and very specifically his views on political control through eugenics." Me: "...or that."

I do have my criticisms. The modern trend of 8-episode orders meant that the storytelling of the show was awkwardly constrained in places. A 12 or 13 episode run would have served it much better and let it sell some ideas that got touched on but not satisfyingly resolved.

000

realbrickwall @realbrickwall.bsky.social · 08/09/2026

As a story, of course, it's quite fun. It recalls the superhero genre as it was during the time period it's set in, but with a modern flair. I particularly enjoy that they gave this Spider-man a superpower no Spider-man has ever had before: being Nicholas Cage.

realbrickwall @realbrickwall.bsky.social · 08/09/2026

Binged the entirety of the Spider-Noir show yesterday. A lot of incredible work done by a lot of people on this production. The costuming, prop work, lighting, even use of what appear to be painted backdrops for some shots, are better than 99% of what big studios put out these days.

I think just about everyone would agree, but nobody in a position of power (hosting an event where you get little snacks on toothpicks) is willing to risk the impropriety. I call upon you all to be strong. We are rotting in want of your bravery. Shatter the cage of classism. Spell it "orderve".

110

realbrickwall @realbrickwall.bsky.social · 03/09/2026

I speak a decent amount of French. I know English spelling rules are a wretched hodge-podge of phonetics and tradition. None of the sins of "hors d'ouevre", not semantic drift nor difficulty, are truly unique in English but in nonetheless stands as an ossified blemish upon our entire culture.

110

realbrickwall @realbrickwall.bsky.social · 03/09/2026

I know that we're in a difficult era, and that it's unreasonable to demand people expend their attention on yet another movement. However, a change must be made, and an ideal time will never come. I ask that you all join me in demanding action now. Can we please just spell it "orderve(s)".
