That would make sense! I replied to another of your comments, but definitely The Final Strife!! Far more interesting characters and world building (and plot twists!!). Not so much a romantasy but still has romance subplots.

Oooh I loved the obeah! Animal companions always win me over😆 Totally fair that this series isn’t for everyone. Her other series starting with The Final Strife is amazing! Less romance, but even more incredible world building and story telling. Feels more polished as well. Definitely recommend!

Oh right! I also read this last year and had to go flip through the pages to remember what the dialogue looked like😆 It would be interesting to know why she made that stylistic choice

I think the author is really strong at world building! The mysteries of the world pulled me in, and I thought it was a fresh take on the fae genre. I also just don’t like too much romance in my books, but I felt there was a good balance between story + romance.

As someone who doesn’t typically read romantasy, I LOVE this book and it’s by one of my favorite authors 🙌🏼 The sequel comes out this month so if you haven’t read Faebound yet, now is the time! #booksky 🌈📚

Release day for Silver and Smoke! I thought it was a fun read, so go check it out! 🥳 #booksky

Cover of the book Silver and Smoke by Van Hoang with arrows pointing to notable book attributes including: found family, old Hollywood setting, clan politics, ghosts with their own agenda, and a 4-star rating

Description for Silver and Smoke which reads: “More like sisters than best friends, Issa Bui and Olivia Nong grew up dreaming of becoming movie stars. But for young Vietnamese women in 1930s Hollywood, the MGM backlot seems unreachable. Undeterred, Issa knows she’s meant for great things. The blood of shamans run through her veins. To find fame in this town, for herself and for Olivia, Issa needs to make connections. For starters, with her dead grandmother Ba Ngoai. Frightening enough in life— Issa’s own mother forbade any contact— Ba Ngoai is even more intimidating in death. A formidable presence of smoke, promises, and pacts, Ba Ngoai introduces Issa and Olivia to her friend on the other side Ava Lin Rang, a singularly magnetic Asian star of the silent screen. Ava coaches, encourages, and utilizes her own unique influence to open doors for her determined protégées. As Issa begins drawing on her own untapped powers, every dream is coming true. But in a city of illusions, at what cost?”

Made a reading journal entry for The Tainted Cup and this “are you stupid” sticker was just so perfect for a very sherlockian main character 😌 (crossed out writing bc spoilers lol) #booksky

Resharing this! Also, I’ve seen people’s requests and will add more when I have time, it’s oddly clunky adding people to these. I’m making this one just reviewers cos I got so many requests from authors that I need to make a separate author version. #booksky #diversebooksky go.bsky.app/Ax5LErr

Really good points! I use both mostly because I’ve had Goodreads for over a decade and it’s hard to let go, but I can totally see how boycotting Goodreads entirely would have a big impact on indie authors.

“I have too many books” -judgemental -boring -implies impulse-control issues “The books... they have me.” - mysterious - occult - implies you are at the mercy of a library of books that have gained sentience and are holding you hostage #readingcommunity

I don't know who needs to hear this, but you don't need to justify your reading preferences and choices to anyone. Audiobooks count as reading. Also, you don't have to finish books you don't enjoy. Don't read to impress, read for yourself. Life's too short, love yourself, ok? Signed, a librarian.
