Almost like we want an agency that can implement a congressional mandate without direct interference from the President. A thing we had for a hundred years until SCOTUS decided they're unconstitutional!

If you refinance your mortgage make sure to check BOTH LOANS for interest paid to deduct. Otherwise, if you do it late in the year, it may seem like you paid a suspiciously low amount of interest not worth itemizing.

I agree as to the colloquial description but I don't think the Maine DSA is doing something sneaky, or underhanded, or objectionable by using a consistent definition of "endorse" across their communications.

Was it unfair for other Olympic swimmers to have to compete against Michael Phelps, given his biological advantages? Are trans womens' advantages larger or smaller than his? Nobody cares. Biological advantages are unfair in exactly one context.

In an amusing inversion, a local mayoral candidates door knocker deciding to ignore our "no knocking" sign was a reason to vote against them. There were other policy reasons, of course. But ignoring our sign didn't help!

Not sure if it's a parody as such but Animal Farm is not just a broad allegory for communism but, like, the Russian revolution and Stalin in specific.

To be clear, I think war with Iran is bad and I would prefer Congress stop Trump from doing it but the barrier to Congressional authorization is a procedural rule in the Senate, not a lack of majority congressional support.

Caleb Alexander @readingcabbage.bsky.social · 05/03/2026
Real illustration of the absurdity of the cloture role in the Senate today. There's clearly majority support for authorizing Trump's actions in Iran but Congress can't actually authorize it because majority support *isn't enough.* The "Article I crisis" is the cloture rule in the Senate.

AI's make it much easier to make changes you don't understand that have the appearance of being functional, and that's a problem, but claiming every programmer using AI is vibecoding or deskilling themselves is crazy.
000
Caleb Alexander @readingcabbage.bsky.social · 04/03/2026
But who typed the characters doesn't matter. If you made a change whose impact you don't understand it doesn't matter whether you typed it or an AI did. Same with making a change you do understand. If you review an AI's changes to the level of any other dev I don't see the issue.

Caleb Alexander @readingcabbage.bsky.social · 04/03/2026
Feel like there's a disconnect when interpreting a phrase like "the AI writes 99% of my code" where one side equates it to vibecoding (the coder doesn't know what the change is doing) and one side means "I did not literally type the characters."

Something I've really been radicalized on the last year or two. It is a crime to kill someone through recklessness or negligence but if it's a parent killing a kid by denying life saving medicine it's fine, apparently.

Texas measles victim’s parents stand by decision to not vaccinate
The measles vaccine has been proven to be safe and effective against the disease, which is highly contagious and can be life threatening.

Will never forget an interview I read with one of the parents whose kid died of measles last year. Asked "would you vaccinate if you could do it again?" They say no, it was all God's plan or some shit.

"I don't want to read this because it is disgusting to me" is totally valid.

"I don't think anyone should be allowed to read or write this because it is disgusting to me" is authoritarian.

The people in the comments insisting that they have read a bunch of books, none of whose titles or authors they can recall, is crazy to me. I couldn't name every of the half dozen or so books I read in the last year, but I could name at least one!

Tumblr is, unironically, better designed for this kind of discussion than websites like Bluesky, Twitter, or Mastodon.

Microblogging platforms structurally resist nuanced discussion on any issue. Their proliferation is a substantial contributor to dumbing down of the discourse.

Insane but true fact: making US roads as safe as Canadian, Australian, or European roads would save more lives than eliminating murder from the US.

I'm imagining a hypothetical sale to Oracle/Ellison/etc but within the act's timeframe. My impression is Senator Warren would also have found such a sale problematic. My read of her criticism is about who is being sold to, not about when the sale is happening. Which is what Mike is criticizing.

Once upon a time I would have put "independent redistricting" on a list like this. Disturbing that today that feels like pre-emptive unilateral disarmament. Although, feels like a similar kind of logic could extend to a lot of these proposals...

I think the basic advice is fine but the choice of example is poor. Sometimes if your partner cares a lot about a thing you should change to accommodate them, even if you don't care a lot about it.

Blowing up shipwrecked people is just like Jesus healing people on Sunday!
Ms. Villalba said the second strike was also justified, and she does not believe the United States is indiscriminately targeting boats.
“They should have done that strike regardless,” she said. “Every human being does have value, but if you’re caught up in something that’s very detrimental to society, I think that you should die.”
She compared these strikes to a story in the Bible, when Jesus healed someone on a Sunday, contradicting religious rules that forbid work on that day. Some laws are worth breaking for the betterment of mankind, she said, just like the biblical story was trying to show.

Even granting Valve has the right not to distribute it, surely criticism of its exercise of that right is not impermissible. Is Valve obliged to never distribute any game it has the right not to distribute?

This relationship is a contingent fact of housing prices being largely demand driven, though. My impression is people who want more affordable housing want to get there by building more houses. I don't see how that necessitates economic decline.

Honestly, one of the great American poems. Arguably the great American poem.
Text of "The New Colossus" by Emma Lazarus:
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
