When I first started learning about the ancient Mesopotamian demoness, Lamashtu, about fifteen years ago, it never occurred to me how much I'd end up saying 'semen stealing'... Also this was so much fun!

Which, having actually looked at it rather than just going on a Christmas-destroyed brain, is actually Tales Accursed!

I hope you enjoy it! (And much more importantly, I hope the hip op and recovery went smoothly).

I am really enjoying this from @readingartefacts.bsky.social - a more in-depth look at Christmas traditions than other books I've come across but also filled with humour. A perfectly cosy read.

Legitimately cannot believe that anyone thinks Woman's Lore is in a category with these five amazing books!

That demon of childbirth and infant death that Pazuzu works against, though, is Lamashtu! My fondest hope for the new film is that they have to pull in Pazuzu to help them as if it's one of the late Godzilla movies where Godzilla ends up teaming up with the good guys.

In the original Exorcist, the antagonist demon is called Pazuzu. Pazuzu was a Mesopotamian demon but he is also a protective force - he saves children and mothers from a demon of childbirth and infant death. So to have him spend the film attacking a mother and her child is really appalling slander.

The evil demon in the latest Exorcist movie is Lamashtu! And this makes me happy not only because Lamashtu is one of the best demons going and never gets enough play in modern culture, but also because it rectifies a hideous unfairness in the original Exorcist.

Slightly concerned that my discovery this morning that Kipferl bakery can deliver me slices of sachertorte within forty minutes has, by this afternoon, led me to the sort of decadence that normally heralds the collapse of civilisation.
