I think I posted about this before but only said she was wrong to invade the child’s privacy. She asked a question, and I have an answer: neither politicians nor a committee of clinicians should decide. It should be decided by the child. And a specialist should follow WPATH SOC8, simple isn’t it?
Baroness Cass (CB) My Lords, I have spoken to my clinical colleagues about the issue of age at enrolment and they expect enrolment at 11 or 12 to be vanishingly rare. However, I ask noble Lords to consider the case of a child I will call Jo, who was a biological male socially transitioned at two and a half by his parents. At 11, she—I say this advisedly, because the chances of her reverting to her biological gender are vanishingly remote-has been in stealth and will not go to secondary school because she is so afraid of being outed in that environment. She is now refusing to come out of her room except very rarely and has weak bones, not as a result of puberty blockers but through inactivity. Should her subsequent treatment be decided by politicions or by the clinicians looking fter her?

Unbelievable. Hilary Cass continues to call for conversion therapy aimed at trans people aged 18 to 25. She is also confused about the Levy review’s remit and her own.
From Hansard, House of Lords, Baroness Cass, a crossbencher, said My Lords, we know that the 18 to 25 year-olds have many of the same complex problems as the under-18s and, as the Minister has said, they need similar holistic wraparound care, although that is not necessarily yet in place. However, Dr Levy’s review had a narrower remit than mine, focused on quality improvement rather than the model of care, so as a next step would the Minister agree to ask departmental and NHSE colleagues to convene a group, which should include independent experts, representatives of professional groups and representatives of the new children’s and young people’s services as well as service users, to consider how we best understand and, importantly, improve clinical outcomes for this group of young adults?

Fake news: “Motion passed at party conference calls for new approach to implementing ruling that legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex only” Reality: www.libdems.org.uk/conference/m...
partial screenshot of the motion text

The Chair of the EHRC, Dr Mary-Ann Stephenson, was appointed by the Government against the advice of the Women and Equalities Committee and the Joint Committee on Human Rights.
Conference believes:
Trans women are women, trans men are men, and everyone deserves to live in safety and with dignity.
The rights of women and of trans people are not in competition; both are essential to a fair society.
The Code of Practice is discriminatory and unworkable, and places an undue burden on service providers.
Conference reaffirms its commitment to reforming the Gender Recognition Act to remove the requirement for medical reports, end the spousal veto, and recognise non-binary people in law.
Conference calls for:
Parliament to appoint a dedicated cross-party committee to review how the law should better protect trans people’s rights, taking evidence from impacted groups, including trans people, and proposing amendments to legislation where necessary.
The EHRC to issue a new Code of Practice that is inclusive, workable and ensures everybody can safely access public facilities and providers are protected from legal risk.
The EHRC to monitor the impact of any Code of Practice it produces, and update it should evidence demonstrate that it is unworkable, harmful or discriminatory.
Future appointments of the EHRC Chair to be subject to a confirmatory vote by the Women and Equalities Committee.

Too many Liberal Democrats spoke for the motion, seven of them, and Peter chose to make sure the minority was heard. Journalism at its highest. 🫢
Peter Walker 3h ago
At the Liberal Democrat conference there is about to be a debate on a motion on trans rights. If the motion is passed - which seems likely - then the LDs would be the first major UK party to explicitly reject the EHRC guidance and call for possible legal change to the supreme court ruling. 1/8

The speaker proposing the motion argues that the EHRC guidance is essentially unworkable, and says a rise in anti-trans rhetoric has led to more hate crimes: "The rights of women and the rights of trans people do not have to be placed on opposite sides of a manufactured culture war." 2/8

The speaker here is Lucas North from Tameside, I should add. 3/8First speaker against the motion, CIlr Mark Johnston from Reigate, argues that nothing should distract the Lib Dems from their purpose of ensuring Nigel Farage doesn't become PM. This means realism, he says:
"That realism means accepting the supreme court determination last year is unassailable." 4/8

Johnson ends: "Are we going back to our constituencies to prepare for government, or are we going back to our bedrooms to prepare for irrelevance?" 5/8

Judging by the relative levels of support from the room for the two sides, this motion is going to pass easily. 6/8Another anti-speech, from Zoe Hollowood of Tendring: "If we pass this motion, we are telling women we think they are second-class citizens... This policy is totally out of touch with both public sentiment and public priorities." 7/8

Motion passes by miles in the hall, and online. The motion is carried - the Lib Dems are the first major party* to explicitly reject the EWRC guidance.
*The Greens oppose it but I more meant the big three in parliament 8/8
