Congrats kids! You’ve identified your chemistry lab unknown as anhydrous HF!

Here’s a happy bit of trivia: Too much vitamin D can give you kidney stones. So good luck.

So it’s NOT that? That’s wild! Maybe it has something to do with supercritical water going subcritical when pressure is released?

Eventually, the force all gets transferred to the strongest point, and it can’t hold anymore.

If you’ve ever cut down a tree, you’ll understand foreshocks. You start hearing cracks before it falls. The force, relative to the strength of the material, is now high. Some of the material can’t hold, but the main bulk can. The weak areas start to break and put the force on the strongest point.

When you can get solar from California when it’s cloudy in Colorado, then wind from the plains when an atmospheric river strikes California, you won’t need as much base generation.
100
reactionsf.bsky.social @reactionsf.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
You are still failing to recognize the sheer scale of batteries needed for such a transformation. In fact, a hyperconnected grid is the only solution for reducing base generation.
100
reactionsf.bsky.social @reactionsf.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
California has a reasonable amount, but that’s still just around 10%. The point is, base generation is needed.
100
reactionsf.bsky.social @reactionsf.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
And how much of CA’s energy needs does that produce?

reactionsf.bsky.social @reactionsf.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
Get a few cloudy days, and you’ll need thousands of times what we have now. That would take centuries of mining to get the necessary raw materials. And that’s JUST for California.
100
reactionsf.bsky.social @reactionsf.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
But it can’t be stored cheaply. Batteries are great for load leveling, which is currently done mostly with natural gas. But the scale necessary to get through the night without substantial base generation is hundreds of times what we have now.
100
reactionsf.bsky.social @reactionsf.bsky.social · 06/05/2026
This will reduce overall energy demand but increase electricity demand.
100
reactionsf.bsky.social @reactionsf.bsky.social · 06/05/2026
The total battery capacity mentioned in the article is approximately 1% of California’s daily power needs.
100
reactionsf.bsky.social @reactionsf.bsky.social · 06/05/2026
This is true regardless of the battery technology used or the renewable energy technology used. Now let’s say you go to the northeast where you have 6 months of low generation. Now you need 5 months of storage and 200% of renewable generation capacity.
110
reactionsf.bsky.social @reactionsf.bsky.social · 06/05/2026
For 100% renewable use without base generation, 10 days a month dropping to 20% of regular generation, you need 140% of daily usage renewable generation capacity, 8 days of storage. With 30% base generation, you need 90% of daily usage renewable generation capacity, 4 days of storage.
100
reactionsf.bsky.social @reactionsf.bsky.social · 06/05/2026
The volume of batteries that you need to get through dark days makes them unaffordable. Even a little base generation massively decreases the amount of battery you need to get through them.
100
reactionsf.bsky.social @reactionsf.bsky.social · 06/05/2026
No battery can make CA 100% solar, wind, and hydro. 80%? Maybe. You must have base generation. Now maybe, just maybe, that can be done with renewable hydrogen or other renewable fuels, but not with current technology.

reactionsf.bsky.social @reactionsf.bsky.social · 06/05/2026
A nuclear base generation providing at least a third of the electricity goes a LONG way towards making the rest renewable.
200
reactionsf.bsky.social @reactionsf.bsky.social · 06/05/2026
This, and power usage fluctuations, are why we need batteries. But it still doesn’t solve the generation problem. You also realistically need at least 200 hours of storage for the full energy demand of CA to realistically get through a storm.
210
reactionsf.bsky.social @reactionsf.bsky.social · 06/05/2026
The downside is that nuclear power plants generate electricity while these only store it. This is in fact great, but it’s only half of the problem.

Well, we haven’t run out of oil stockpiles yet. So no real impact on the economy yet. And the fertilizer shortages won’t bring pain until September. And we can still all play pretend on credit for a little while after things run out.
