I’m delighted to have contributed the chapter on curriculum to Succeeding as an RE Teacher, edited by Andy Lewis. Looking at the list of contributors, I can’t help feeling I’ve somehow ended up among the RE saints and sages. 📚 You can pre-order from Waterstones with 25% off using the code SUMMER26.

Writing for RE Today felt intimidating, but I’m proud to see my review of The Truth About Us in print. This book helps teachers & students think more carefully about identity, power, caste, & classification, and about how knowledge is shaped & reshaped over time. For me it’s a must read.

I have been trying to teach myself crochet for almost a month. My house is littered with abandoned granny squares. This is the first one I have persevered with. I was stitching whilst watching The Traitors, so I kept losing count. It was a tense episode! So there are bumpy bits! I am pleased!

My mental health has taken a real battering lately and I am having counselling to help. But I am also doing more things that bring me joy - even if sometimes I need dragging out to do them. Today we had a family walk around our village and found two geocaches

Thought-provoking day representing my Trust RE subject community and speaking to AQA about the future of GCSE RS. Feels like we’re in exciting times. Also a little nostalgic being back on my old uni stomping ground 😊

I’m looking forward to speaking at #StrictlyRE for @natre-update.bsky.social on 31st January about the non-examined KS4 curriculum I created for Inspiration Trust. It’s an ambitious, diverse, disciplinary and scholarly curriculum that has been tested in real classrooms - & we talk assessment!

Pleased to see another report highlighting how studying and respecting religious beliefs and customs, as well as ethical issues, sits within personal development and wellbeing.

It also: • completed our school cover sheet • generated a clear answer sheet for the cover teacher. Which makes it usable even for non-specialists and it means that RS cover is hopefully straightforward. Sometimes I ask it to do a version with a lower reading ages 6/7

Because the AI has the original lesson, the worksheet usually stays very close to my intended lesson content. It even converts my retrieval task into a cover task and gives them definitions of key terms that match the ones we use. 4/7

So I uploaded my lesson PowerPoint into ChatGPT and asked it to turn the content into a one-hour worksheet that students can do independently. I specified: • reading + writing tasks • full lesson length • reading age Excuse my typo on my screenshot prompt- I was rushing! 3/7

Thanks, I have been using a lot of videos from places like Tik Tok and a bit of AI coaching. I also have obsessive tendencies. 😂 Currently trying granny squares but I keep losing count and they go all round.

Reducing my medication will hopefully mean that I can find my love of reading again. My first book of the year is done, I reread this every year & each time it prompts me to think about something different. This year it was whether seeing Jesus as Black takes away from his Jewish identity. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I have come back to messages asking how I am. It has been hard, but I am about to finish abemaciclib which will make life much easier. Other medication changes have left me feeling tired and sick a lot & so there has been no gardening. I am teaching myself to crochet though. This is 2 weeks in.

Long may I have a boy who loves cutting & arranging his own flowers… 🌸 Though he did say he needed the ones with the strongest perfume to cover the smell of sour milk & feet in his bedroom 😁 He also helped me make a bouquet for the kitchen. I think I still have a few more weeks of cut flowers. 🌱

A bereavement made for a difficult end to the summer and start to the new term. It left little time for gardening. Today I managed an hour, and I love our new bird feeder that once belonged to my grandad. Plenty of deadheading and staking still to do! 🌱

7 hours of non-stop rides at Europa Park and I’ve finally admitted temporary defeat! 🏁 Found the perfect #RETeacherOnTour rest spot… of course, it’s a church. Mr McGee thinks it’s hilarious that even in a theme park, I can find a church. Video 👇

Cut another massive dahlia from the garden this evening. Every room in the house is now filled with flowers from the garden. I’ve officially become Elton John meets Monty Don. 🌱

New in the garden: poppies swaying in the breeze, a soft white & pale pink dahlia, mini alliums, bright toadflax, cheerful begonias, a mini pink & white dahlia, and trailing lobelia 🌱

Crispy harissa “lamb” flatbreads with sumac shallots and cucumber. The lamb was actually oyster mushrooms- super tasty and very filling. I had the second half cold for our picnic From my grubby box 🍽️

Went geocaching at Caistor St Edmund’s today. Found 4 caches including a Jesus-themed one - I love it when my worlds collide. We had a picnic, met lots of sheep, did some paddling, and even spotted a kingfisher! #Geocaching

For some reason my cosmos are tiny this year, but the ones on the patio are making the most of what little breeze there is. 🌱

Next year’s garden is brewing on my patio. Still waiting for those stubborn aquilegia. Started them in the fridge, had a few mild days, but now it’s too hot again! 🌱

The weather has cooled & I have more time so I have planted my seeds for next spring’s garden. I was so happy doing some sit-down gardening that I looked up & it was dark. I have planted Forget-me-nots, foxgloves, honesty, aquilegia, wallflowers, sweet rocket, hollyhocks, rose campion & clary sage 🌱

Many of our KS3 students are familiar with Doom Paintings. Here in Norfolk we have surviving examples at West Somerton, Bradfield, Houghton on the Hill and Attleborough. 16/18

Many A Level specifications include feminist theology and the idea of God as mother. This is central to Julian of Norwich.15/18

Whilst on the topic of GCSE, the use of “love thy neighbour” at GCSE is meme worthy. You could teach about Christian love through Julian of Norwich, as well as the concept of salvation. 14/18

Often this is built around the crucifixion of Jesus. We could explicitly teach about the link between suffering & faith through Julian of Norwich and her context. This would help our students understand the Womanist position better. 12/18

Again from History many students are aware of the Reformation context of translating scripture so everyone can read the Bible and the role of the printing press in popularising this. This is Julian’s world . Julian’s writings were also in English. 9/18

On a historical note we have a unit that looks at how events like the Black Death & the Crusades prompted some to question the authority of the church & how this created a climate that fuelled the Reformation. One of my students did some research on the “Fighting Bishop” 8/18

In a similar way most students have met the feudal system in history. Julian’s understanding of God is both shaped by this context but also challenges it. This examination of context feels very Religion and Worldviews to me. 7/18

Most KS3 students have knowledge of the Black Death. Their recent Covid experiences mean they have a personal knowledge hook, to be used with care. This is also Julian’s context & Covid made her relevant to a new group of people all over again - this could be explored in lessons. 6/18

After listening to a talk about Margery Kempe at the Norwich History Festival, this line made me laugh. “As is characteristic of Margery, her main focus in her conversation with Julian was herself” 😄 4/18

If you were teaching about judgement this is a lovely passage about Julian’s lack of judgement of others. 3/18
