Right. One of those "I was unharmed by the virus so everyone else should stop being a fucking pussy about it" types who hated that some measures to protect vulnerable people inconvenienced him. Those guys are the worst.

I've known plenty of people who moved to Alberta and became hardcore Alberta conservatives afterwards. Was this guy one of them or did he move there recently so he can live in a sovereign Alberta?

Dear producers of "Matchbox: The Movie": Give me a Rob Thomas cameo. Make it real. Or else forget about it.

I would love it if for just once in sports broadcasting history, a commentator would say, "No one enjoys playing the game less than him, I'll tell you what!"

I don't know who Langley is and I haven't heard her supposedly inescapable big hit. However, if I hadn't moved to a multicultural metropolis, I think I would've heard it a thousand times already. 2/2

From 2019-2025, my work took me to a small town where I came to know who Morgan Wallen, Luke Combs, Luke Bryan, and all the other country Lukes were. I heard their songs plenty. Last summer, I moved to Vancouver, where no one knows who they are and I haven't heard their music since. 1/2

I agree. However, I think it might be better to leave it standing and turn it into a museum documenting the ICE atrocities and other crimes committed by this admin (like a Holocaust museum or Eastern European communism museum).

I read this too quickly and then pictured Manny Ramirez making a improbable, triumphant return to MLB as a reliever, and I kind of wish that actually was the case.

But on the question of who should be2026 MVP, if the season ended today, I'd vote PCA as I think his combination of hitting like Ohtani and playing the best CF since Andruw Jones (or 2015 Kev K.) is more valuable than Ohtani hitting like PCA and being an ace-level pitcher for 14 starts. (2/2)
000
R. Dubya Slade @rdubyaslade.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
On that we can agree. Ace pitchers are extremely valuable. Anyone would be foolish not to want an ace who can hit like an MVP. But I see that as a different question: who would you rather have on your roster? I would take Ohtani in a heart beat. (1/2)

He and PCA are virtually identical hitters (Ohtani 153 wRC+ / PCA 155 wRC+). PCA provides more value on the basepaths and his defense may set Statcast records - it's that good. His half-season of excellent pitching isn't enough to offset what PCA is doing in the field, and fWAR and bWAR agree. (3/4)

R. Dubya Slade @rdubyaslade.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
He doesn't have to be the best at hitting and pitching, but his combined efforts have to make him (arguably) better than everyone else to be MVP. The last 2 years, his hitting alone made him better than everyone else. This year, his hitting isn't clearly better than everyone else. (2/4)

55 HR - 146 R - 102 RBI - 20 SB - .282 AVG - .392 OBP - .622 SLG - .340 ISO - 172 wRC+ - 7.5 WAR (not even counting his pitching WAR). In 2025, that guy was 1st in runs, SLG, ISO, OPS, wRC+, and WAR by wide margins. That guy didn't need to pitch to be MVP. (1/4)

R. Dubya Slade @rdubyaslade.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
They're almost the same player at the plate. Ohtani did a great job of pitching in 85 IP. But his pitching contributions aren't enough to come close to PCA's WAR totals, and as long as Ohtani isn't pitching and PCA is still fielding, that gap is only going to widen. Voters will take notice. (5/5)

R. Dubya Slade @rdubyaslade.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
This year, he isn't far and away the best hitter. He leads the league in OPS by 0.19 points. The margin is small. Look at these lines: Ohtani - 29 HR - 81 R - 78 RBI - 7 SB - .295 AVG - .392 OBP - .556 SLG PCA - 30 HR - 89 R - 78 RBI - 31 SB - .281 AVG - .379 OBP - .550 SLG (4/5)

R. Dubya Slade @rdubyaslade.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
You said WAR doesn't matter, but Ohtani won the last two MVPs because led all NL hitters in WAR and wRC+ by large margins. He had video game stats. He only has 47 IP last year, and those innings wouldn't have mattered. He would've been MVP without them, like when he didn't pitch in 2024. (3/5)

R. Dubya Slade @rdubyaslade.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
Ohtani wouldn't get many votes as a pitcher alone. Sure, his ERA is excellent. But Miz has a better one, and he isn't missing starts. Of NL pitchers with over 80 IP, Ohtani's ERA is 2nd, FIP is 3rd, K/9 is 12th, and BB/9 is 27th. Miz is 1st in ERA, 1st in FIP, 1st in K/9, and BB/9 is 4th. (2/5)

R. Dubya Slade @rdubyaslade.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
I asked about Miller vs. Miz as an aside. I was curious what you thought. I don't see Miller getting many votes for MVP. Pitchers don't win it often, and only Eckersley and Fingers did it while pitching less than 100.0 in a season. That was from a different era with different voters. (1/5)

R. Dubya Slade @rdubyaslade.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
Serious somewhat related questions: Mason Miller has a 0.86 ERA and is striking out 16.31 hitters per 9 innings. If he keeps this up over another 20 innings or so, do you think he will be in the MVP conversation? Do you think he could beat Misiorowski for the Cy Young?

R. Dubya Slade @rdubyaslade.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
A reliever with Ohtani's numbers would win the MVP in 1992.
000
R. Dubya Slade @rdubyaslade.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
Ohtani is an incredible singular talent. Everyone would want to sign him. No question. But it's silly to bring that up in a debate about who is this year's NL MVP. What the player does on the field this year is the only thing that should matter, not how desirable he is to all GMs.
100
R. Dubya Slade @rdubyaslade.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
I'm not dismissing it. He was incredible when he pitched. However, I just don't believe that his half a season of pitching is worth more than PCA's full season of fielding.
100
R. Dubya Slade @rdubyaslade.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
Yes, every GM would pick Ohtani over PCA because everyone wants to make billions off him. But I don't think the most valuable player award is supposed to just go to the guy who sells the most merch and brings in the most sponsorship and endorsement money.

R. Dubya Slade @rdubyaslade.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
Whereas their slash lines are remarkably similar, including their HR, R, and RBI totals, if the season ended today, I'd have to give PCA the MVP for being the best defender in the game this year and for his superior baserunning (he's already reached the 30/30 club and might join the 40/40). (2 of 2)
100
R. Dubya Slade @rdubyaslade.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
Okay, but neither of them are pitching. Ohtani threw 85 innings. He has just under half a season's worth of starts. He probably won't pitch again this year. If you value his limited innings on the mound more than PCA's daily contributions in the field, he's the guy. (1 of 2)

R. Dubya Slade @rdubyaslade.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
But then PCA has the most OAA and FRV of everyone in baseball this year while playing a premium defensive position. He's also in the top 10 according to DRS. PCA's hitting + defense gives him 8.2 fWAR and 7.7 bWAR. Ohtani's hitting + pitching gives him 7.0 fWAR and 6.7 bWAR. It's no contest.

R. Dubya Slade @rdubyaslade.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
PCA also leads because Shohei's wonky knee took him out of the rotation. Shohei has 3.0 fWAR from pitching, but he's missed about 10 turns of the rotation now, and PCA stays on the field amassing a ton of value in CF. It's too bad for Shohei, but his hitting alone isn't enough to beat PCA.

Don't the Nationals realize they're only 2 games out of a wild card and trading away an infielder who has been mashing this year for a young pitcher with elbow inflammation isn't going to help them this year or next?

They would need to dump more salary. Maybe they could trade Bieber if he pitches two more games like he did in his last start. Complicating matters is that Springer has 10-and-5 rights, so he can veto any trade if he wants (and the Jays would probably have to pay some his salary anyway).

MLB determines if they get penalized at the end of the year. Right now, Spotrac estimates that the luxury tax payroll number is a hair under $307M. They would need to lower their payroll by $23M to get below the threshold. By my math, trading those guys lowers payroll by $22.76M. 1/2
