My wife and I went on a trip to Ireland to see some of their prehistoric stuff; they have loads! Too many highlights but here's one - Carrowkeel Cemetary

#gardening #coldframe #ukgardening #autumn #fall A project I need to complete in the garden before winter is done. It will over winter most of my smaller hosta pots and a few other bits and pieces. Very pleased although think the plastic isn't UV stable which will be a bit of a pain later....

#gardening #delphinium #uk #flowers My wife and I were beginning to think this pot was jinked as nothing grew very well in it except one year's bedding. Happily a late spring purchase from the local garden centre seems very happy. Next thing is to see if it survives the winter....

Bandcamp is a great online music source; all genres, tastes and tempos. You can listen for free for a time. The next Bandcamp Friday, where all funds you pay go to the artist, is this Friday, May 1st. Your timezone may alter this. The app is good too. bandcamp.com patternsoflife.bandcamp.com

Roger Wilson

Recording as Patterns of Life, mostly solo and mostly synthesisers. Mostly instrumental as well. I enjoy trying to get a good groove (not necessarily up-tempo) with melodic work over the top.

I would highly recommend clearing one area to get one crop going, so you have some reward for the hard work; my wife & I had an allotment for over 15 years, it took 3 or 4 until we cleared the whole plot - Landscape fabric was a great friend!

if it's a native, a local wildlife area would be good, otherwise anywhere there is some room, and possibly the landowners want a windbreak - poplars are good for that!

110

rdjwilson.bsky.social @rdjwilson.bsky.social · 26/03/2026

In a word, yes. You could tidy it up, and guide stems back onto the trellis though. I have hacked roses when they're green but only in desperate circumstances - they do grow back!

010

rdjwilson.bsky.social @rdjwilson.bsky.social · 26/03/2026

The other thing to consider is size; I wouldn't recommend planting actual dwarf trees for espalier - not enough vigour - but you probably don't want orchard sized trees either! I would highly recommend using a fruit tree specialist grower to purchase also.

rdjwilson.bsky.social @rdjwilson.bsky.social · 26/03/2026

If the side of the wall is east facing to sw facing, there's no reason not to. West facing it is more likely you will lose flowers, (and hence fruit) to frosts, so not impossible just less likely to be fruitful 🙂. North not mentioned for reasons I imagine you know!

110

rdjwilson.bsky.social @rdjwilson.bsky.social · 26/03/2026

I certainly wouldn't have a poplar near a public path, or my house; biggest issue is the dropping bits with no warning when they get larger, but the roots are pretty aggressive too... A Maple is pretty benign, if there's room for it, why not!
