When my father was faculty at Cornell he was stopped by the police chief in the street & asked who he was & where he was going. When he balked at the fact that no one but him, an Arab man, was being asked, the chief said “I’m just protecting students” Same guy failed to investigate 7 rapists.

Fascism rose a century ago partly because too many liberals thought the democratic left was as much of a threat as the far right. Just read The Economist from a century ago.

The youngest person his pager attack killed was 9-year-old Fatima Abdullah, who had just started 4th grade. The pager was on a table when it went off and she picked it up to take to her dad. It exploded in her face and reports said it covered the room in her blood. She wanted to learn English.

I don't see how anyone could call this a "tragedy," a mere "conflict," or something "complicated."
Line chart of youth mortality—the share of children who die before age 15—from 2000 to 2025. Palestine’s rate declines from about 3.5% in 2000 to under 2% in 2022, then rises sharply to about 10.5% in 2024 and 9.5% in 2025. Afghanistan declines from 14% to about 6%, while Ukraine, Chile, the United States, and Israel remain around 1% or below in recent years. I'll believe it when I see another Democrat in the White House and/or a Democratic majority in Congress. This is the kind of thing one might say in opposition, but, like most foreign policy issues, voters are less likely to demand accountability for it down the road.

12/ The broader implication is methodological as well as substantive. If we want to understand public opinion on decentralization, we need to look below the national level. Regionally disaggregated analysis is not just a refinement; in cases like Chile, it is essential to understanding the reality.
000
Rodolfo Disi Pavlic @rdisip.bsky.social · 15/04/2026
11/ Figure 3 gives a good illustration of this for administrative decentralization. In Coquimbo and Biobío, respondents without regional identity initially see decentralization as very important at low conflict levels, but those with regional identity surpass them as conflict perception increases.

Rodolfo Disi Pavlic @rdisip.bsky.social · 15/04/2026
10/ This means that the Chilean decentralization debate cannot be read only from national averages. The same identity and grievance mechanisms do not operate in exactly the same way across regions. Local history, political dynamics, and institutional context matter.
100
Rodolfo Disi Pavlic @rdisip.bsky.social · 15/04/2026
9/ We also find evidence that identity and conflict interact, but in a regionally uneven way. In some cases, people with regional identity become especially supportive of decentralization as conflict perceptions rise. In others, the interaction is weaker, absent, or even reversed.
100
Rodolfo Disi Pavlic @rdisip.bsky.social · 15/04/2026
8/ This is one of the article’s main takeaways: support for decentralization often appears to be driven less by attachment to territory by itself than by perceptions of neglect, mismatch, or conflict within centralized governance arrangements.
100
Rodolfo Disi Pavlic @rdisip.bsky.social · 15/04/2026
7/ One main finding is that subnational identity alone doesn't reliably predict support for decentralization in Chilean regions. By contrast, perceived regional conflict, is more consistently linked to supporting decentralization, particularly fiscal decentralization.

Rodolfo Disi Pavlic @rdisip.bsky.social · 15/04/2026
6/ To evaluate this, we use data from the 2019 Regional Barometer, with representative subsamples from 9 Chilean regions. We examine attitudes toward three outcomes: regional administrative decentralization, regional fiscal decentralization, and municipal autonomy. ceder.ulagos.cl/barometro-re...

5/ We advance 3 expectations: 1. Those with stronger subnational identity should support decentralization more. 2. Perceiving more regional conflict should lead to support decentralization. 3. More percieved conflict should strengthen the identity- decentralization link.
100
Rodolfo Disi Pavlic @rdisip.bsky.social · 15/04/2026
4/ Drawing on Social Identity Theory, we examine 2 factors: - Subnational identity: whether individuals primarily identify with their locality. - Perceptions of regional conflict: how salient conflicts over economic, environmental, or cultural issues are in their region.
