im not an ai welfare/rights guy and have even come to similar thoughts wrt anthropic/openai's beliefs about what an ai should be like having large unintended consequences on their models' behavior, but i'm definitely uncomfortable with the a priori rejection of those concerns

yeah i definitely agree, though i think theres a lot of subcultural baggage keeping them from focusing on anything more immediate/practical like that. if you got into ai/alignment via ea they very heavily emphasize the x-risk/human extinction element as the reason its such a pressing issue

i think a "vibe shift" did occur and did help trump win the 2024 election, it just wasn't an object-level shift in favor of his policies, it was a meta-level shift against caring about kind of things which added up to a countless number of reasons electing him was obviously a terrible idea

fun politically convenient result but jfc this paper set off every ariely/gino alarm i can think of. 4 studies of <200 berkeley undergrads playing lab games with p~=.05 results generalized to societal effects, im shocked the 2 orders of magnitude larger n replications found the opposite effect
