I vaguely remember when DeepSeek first entered public consciousness and I think more recently a bunch of mainstream US news outlets had pieces on open-weight models (which was seen as kind of a China thing) Do you feel US discourse also got smarter during those periods? /genq

(Disclaimer: I'm not American) Hasn't there been previous instances where there concerns in the US that China was getting better (or had already gotten better) at Gen AI?

(Undergrad here) Wait, journals actually ask authors to suggest peer reviewers??? Is this the researcher version of students having a class presentation and giving their classmates questions to ask them during Q&A so they can prepare answers in advance LOL

Actually there is a confounding variable!! It's the number of ice creams sold!! More ice creams sold makes the weather hotter, and also encourages preschoolers to play more That's why ice-cream eaters drown more: they were playing in the pool

(Undergrad here) Is it the norm for unis to make the response rates for teaching evals a KPI for profs? I've had profs at my uni beg us to fill it in, saying the higher-ups take it seriously, but I'd interpreted it as uni mgmt focusing on how +ve/-ve the results are, not the response rate

(I'm an undergraduate) What's the difference between peer review culture in CS vs sociology? My limited knowledge (correct me if I'm wrong) is that conferences are more common in CS, while in soci, journal articles are more common?

Sorry, undergrad here, what is "citation-as-signalling"? I tried to search it up online (no, I didn't ask an LLM lol), and what I found was either about citations in law or citations with phrases like "see also" or "eg". I'm not sure how this relates to citing works one hasn't actually read?

Do you know any good resources to read up on the use of sociological theories in computing? This sounds rlly interesting, I'd love to learn more abt it! I did a quick search online & other than social network analysis, most results seem to be abt applying computing to soci and not vice versa :(
