Virtue ethics says: look at how a virtuous person acts and do the same. A virtuous person is someone who is exceptionally good at something, eg. a virtuoso violinist. But! The whole point of exceptionality is that not everyone can act like that. Eg, I can never play the violin like a virtuoso.

I think I know why state parentalism is typically illustrated in political #philosophy by the enforcement of seatbelt use.

A fun illustration of research in #philosophy. You try to find things by using words. And what you find is: youtu.be/CvqpG2JCMw0

Things I ask LLMs: in terms of microplastics intake, is there evidence-based advice on whether is to use a metal or a plastic spoon for eating yoghurt from its plastic cups, given that some scratching of cup walls is inevitable? You probably won't like the answer.

Me hearing a nice track that's pre-2022: ah nice! Let's add it to favourites. Me hearing a nice track that's post-2022: oh, that's probably ai-shit. Skip to the next one.

Found this in one of the books I had bought on vinted. Like a trace of perfume, this is some strangely heartwarming glimpse in some else's whole world; no less significant than that whole book.

The only meaningful renaming: Trumpistan, its capital being Epsteingrad.

@support.wsocial.eu , sharing posts is broken: if i click "..." > share via link, that link leads to an error page (at least for non w-users). Given that "everything is public on the AT protocol", and the link is to a bsky post, this is real strange.

These character limits make me feel claustrophobic. I guess this microblogging "vibe" traces back to twitter, and further to sms (which were not meant for human communication at ll). Reminds me of the story (or myth?) that space shuttles are constrained by the size of horse asses in Ancient Rome.

russians endorse murder. Nothing new there. What is new is the scale of the problem. The denazification of Germany cost much, harnessed a massive historical momentum, targeted people brainwashed during mere 12 years rather than 110, and still had modest results. What would derusification require?

The us has joined the camp of north korea 🤷🏼‍♂️ (And other authoritarian mfs; in fact, already at the time of the UN vote on Ukraine in Feb 2025).

One of the apparent conclusions is that it’s difficult to leave behind the dirty fossils unless a country has nuclear power. Bravo to the countries who managed that. But overall, we need to do much better than now.

russians occupied Kherson claiming it was a “russian city”. After being forced to leave, they now murder its people. This is the tolstoyevsky in action.

In a desperate attempt to examine this very short life, I’m wondering at 2 am: is it true that zero square circles exist in our world?

I desperately need a way to privately mark people as bullshit-posters. To prevent creating a bubble, I don’t want to silence or block them, BUT I need to know if previously I saw some complete bullshit they posted (maybe even pinning some post). Remembering all of them by names is not an option.

.. which means that north korea is acquiring state of the art expertise with battlefield drones, and South Korea is going to have none. They won’t like the consequences.

I don't care much about the self-tanned ape elected by the "nation" of deplorables. But the climate change is ruining the lives of all people around the globe.

The Pelicot case (drugging and sexually abusing one's partner) is reminiscent of capitalism, specifically of the way we relate to each other (and internalise it in attitude to ourselves). We are constantly being screwed, and yet we remain totally oblivious to this fact. #Pelicapitalism

An interesting paper in moral philosophy. If an action is wrong but does not involve violating someone else’s rights, what is it then that makes it wrong?

Read Richard Feynman's "joking" autobiography. Apart from his appalling moral myopia, my philosopher's eye couldn't help but notice contradictions.

This will help people judge better. Unobstructed judgment is a human right that should be recognized as such everywhere.

AI can provide answers in seconds. That’s convenient, but the real question isn’t whether AI is correct. It’s whether the act of AI providing answers causes people to stop asking questions for themselves.

Deceptive politeness is often defended by claims that it prevents offending the other person. Yet I believe that insincere treatment inflicts a greater offence than the one prevented. So, when someone thanks me for passing salt so much as if I've just saved their life, I'd rather they said nothing.

Another #philosophy #question at 2am. I'd rather ask this a real person. For someone who wants to read high quality philosophy (eg. Popper), and not to spend their precious time on academic publish-or-perish rubbish, how can one know what and where is good philosophy and what is rubbish?

Things I ask ai at 2am: In On Dialogue, does David Bohm completely overlook hermeneutical issues, such as the fact that interpretation is always context-sensitive, so seamless transfer of information between people is an impossible ideal? #philosophy #questions
