Some American officials, speaking privately since Carney’s Strasbourg speech, suggest that in trying to build new bridges — or, if you want, lay new subsea cables — to Europe, and in failing to tamp down anti-American rhetoric in Canada, Carney is helping solidify the “rupture” he says Trump started and raising questions about the future of the Canada-U.S. relationship.

One, speaking on condition they not be identified, told the Star that if Canada wants to cede sovereignty to the EU, it should be careful what it wishes for when it aligns with the Europeans given the rise of nationalist, populist right-wing forces on that continent.

Jamieson Greer, the top U.S. trade negotiator, openly mocked Carney’s concerns about economic and cultural sovereignty, after the prime minister ordered Canada’s negotiators to quit trade talks last month.“The reality is economically, it makes sense for the Canadians to have more interaction with the US,” Greer told Bloomberg television last week. “This is where the growth is. This is where the consumption is. It’s not in Europe. It’s not elsewhere.”

Canadians, he said, have been “very clear over the past year and a half: they’re sovereign. They may want to tie up with the EU now so it raises the question of that whole kind of sovereignty shtick.”

Interesting point
An attempt by liberals to imitate the success of Charlie Kirk would not be going to evangelical megachurches to debate abortion policy with their pastors; it would be organizing chapters of militant liberals within Christian communities and then intervening with national attention and state power every time they didn’t get their own way. It would be threatening Hillsdale College and Liberty University with lawsuits and investigations, and demanding that they establish an affirmative action program for liberal students. It would be setting up ideologically-pure networks of patronage, so that liberal activists could get rewarded for informing on their colleagues and undermining any institution they don’t control.

The Trump admin, MAGA, the Claremont Institute, et al don’t understand what made America powerful, and that’s why they keep overestimating the effectiveness of coercion and military action.
The simple fact is that for all the other evils of Trumpism they simply don’t understand the basis of American power, military or economic. That’s the basis of the absurdity of the last decade in which the US is somehow the defiant rebel against the system it created for its own prosperity and security and which has secured both for going on a century. Listen to their thinking and you see it clearly: We’re the big power. We’re in charge. But we don’t act like we’re in charge. We let ourselves get pushed around. Now we’re going to be in charge. They simply don’t understand that to the extent we are “in charge” the underlying basis of the agreement that puts us in charge. It’s the comparatively easy terms of American global power. They really do imagine that US allies are something like colonies or finlandized client states that we’ve just let get over their skis.

The truth is that this precedes Trumpism. We saw this in that pivotal eighteen months or so between the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001 and the invasion of Iraq in early 2003. (I actually wrote a review essay about this conversation and the books it spawned in a review essay in The New Yorker at the end of 2003.) It was less impetuous and feral. But the outlines are the same: We’re in charge. But we haven’t been acting like we’re in charge.

On occasion, I’ll get a moment of candor that gives away a larger game, even if the comment is to be taken with some grain of irony.

“Donald Trump should not accept Canada as the 51st state; it should obviously be a territory,” says one Trump administration official, who notes that making Canada a state would likely add “so many liberal voters” that it would risk tipping the Electoral College in the Democratic Party’s direction. (U.S. territories, like Puerto Rico, are not allowed electoral votes for the presidency.)

I frequently think of this quote:
“they were all monkeys playing with a microwave. Push a button, a light comes on inside, so it’s a light. Push a different button and stick your hand inside, it burns you, so it’s a weapon. Learn to open and close the door, it’s a place to hide things. Never grasping what it actually did, and maybe not even having the framework necessary to figure it out. No monkey ever reheated a frozen burrito.” James SA Corey, Abaddon’s Gate

Carney’s concerns about the US’s unreliability, after all, hasn’t stopped the Canadian government from expressing a willingness to integrate further with the Yankee menace—deeper economic ties in key industries and new purchases of military hardware. Living next to the world’s political, economic, and cultural superpower means you always find yourself within its gravitational pull, with little chance to escape or, when it comes down to it, no real desire to try, much less succeed.

Mamdani and Platner are clearly men of different temperaments. But the men also represent different paths for the Democratic party’s insurgent left wing, as left-populist candidates ride a wave of voter outrage and base anger at Democratic party leadership to pose serious challenges to the party’s mainstream. In Mamdani, what seems to be a genuine political talent has emerged: his uncommonly disciplined message focuses on affordability issues without shying away from pluralist values or seeming to mimic a more rugged, domineering form of masculinity. But in Platner, some pundits and members of the consultant class seem to have found a vehicle for their own project for the party’s reform, one that is less about policy outcomes than about transforming the Democratic party’s image to embrace men, masculinity and a vision of a rugged, rural whiteness.

“The separatists envision independence not for the Alberta that currently exists, but for an Alberta of their imagination.”
Belanger has a point, though. The Alberta that he, Rath and the rest of their movement yearn for isn’t compatible with most other cultures. Or, indeed, with reality. The separatists envision independence not for the Alberta that currently exists, but for an Alberta of their imagination. An Alberta spooned from a churning cauldron of conspiracy theories and right-wing fantasies.

Very interesting read with numerous takeaways. That said, I think the author overplays the current state of our cultural institutions around shame. They may be badly damaged but they haven’t been completely destroyed. We need more discourse on ethics and norms. We must not abandon them.

It’s interesting that the failure to release “the Epstein file” (whatever it is) seems to be a major line for MAGA supporters. It’s also interesting that the idea of elites preying on the vulnerable is a motivating concern and that the Democrats failed to identify let alone speak to it.
