We need to make sure the Trump voters in our lives are aware that we are aware that they are doing this to the poor.

I'll have to retract my statement that the March for Life never helped anyone. It helped the Measles virus.

Maybe today’s MAGA Christians didn’t start out by gleefully defending murder. But at some point, each of them was shown a shabby, taunting little devil in the corner, and said “yes, I choose that.” rebeccabrattenweiss.substack.com/p/why-the-mo...

Where, indeed? Once again: the right wingers have decided that if it's not a physical newspaper, it's not real journalism.

It's all about surface, all about vibe. They buy into right-wing propaganda because it pushes these "pretty" images of white heterosexual families in the home. (Actually these images are incredibly tacky but that's where all surface-level aesthetics end up, anyway).

This niche group is critical of tech, and anti-AI. As am I. Yet their critique of tech, like their supposed concern for journalism is all about vibe and surface aesthetics. So they persist in voting for political movements that are enabled by and that enable powerful tech elites.

There's a niche right wing cadre that pretends to care about journalism but says nothing about assaults on journalists globally or here. They think the difference between real and fake journalism is "physical newspapers." They love the image of themselves as "gentlemen" reading the paper.

Warnock on the arrest of Don Lemon: It’s chilling, and I think that is the intent. They intend to send chills down the backs of journalists. The authoritarian march is happening in real time, and it’s way past the time to wake up.

I've been meaning to write for years about how anti-LGBTQ ideology predisposes people to become extremists. Historically, extremist movements have often been queerphobic. And the "moderates" I knew who got sucked into MAGA were the queerphobic ones. open.substack.com/pub/rebeccab...

MAGA is a refuge for people who hate institutions because institutions hold them to standards like “don’t be racist,” or "consult the building inspector so the church you’re building won’t collapse and kill people.” open.substack.com/pub/rebeccab...

If I would come up with some advice, it would be EXACTLY THIS. Far too many people say "oh, I don't think it will come to that," when I say Trump will cancel elections or sic ICE on all democrats. Like what do you think is going to stop him? We can't just sit here counting on the hamberders.

Why right-wing men insult the way women look
Sub-rational though this fixation on female beauty may be, it’s of vital political importance to them. And they intend to make it matter to us.

Whatever path they took to arrive at this moral low, whatever sophistries they invoke to justify themselves, these men believe they are entitled to murder women simply for not being “respectful” enough. open.substack.com/pub/rebeccab...

The men defending murder are telling us who they are
Communally, we can deny violent, predatory men the support system they depend on to protect them when they do harm.

We shouldn't be surprised to see conservative Christians defending Donald Trump. They've been practicing for this for years.

'The Books That Made Us' comes out in a week. If you are recovering from having been "educated" in a conservative academic subculture, you may find it relatable. Link to order below.

This regime is such a grotesque inversion of actual gospel values and multiple people I know who are pious churchgoers are cheering it on.

But an awful lot of the folks who ten years ago I thought of as liberal because they were into organics, yoga, herbal tinctures, and howling at the moon have now tumbled straight into conspiracy theories, woowoo stuff, and of course MAGA. Good times. Anyway thanks for your great research and work.

It was so illuminating. Before I read your book my association between yoga and fascism was usually to do with conservative Christians being racist about nonwhite cultures ("if you do yoga you are worshiping Hindu deities who are actually demons and you will be possessed" sort of nonsense).

I was grateful to have the chance to read this book as part of my ongoing informal project of understanding why people get sucked into fascism. Aside from the book offering several essential puzzle-pieces, it also illuminated aspects of arts cultures and subcultures of the 20th century.

Another: the husband of a former friend who went on a weird rant in about the heroism of the Maccabees and how there should be a movie about it but also about how poor Mel Gibson was right about the Jews. This right in front of my proudly Ashkenazi self.

Another example: my former co-author with whom I want nothing to do, who wrote me a weird, inappropriate letter critiquing my opposition to MAGA and setting herself up as adjudicator of Jewish ethics and identity.

Example: the rich white lady quasi-academic who took issue with my depiction of a Jewish character. "Jews should be deeply spiritual like Edith Stein." Note that 1) I'm ethnically Jewish. My critic wasn't. 2) My critic chose an example of a Jew who converted to Catholicism as a "real Jew."

I have issues with some things Mamdani has said but I have bigger issues with Cuomo's actual behavior. Either way this point stands. Among conservative catholics I encountered many people who fetishized the Ideal Jew while spreading hate about real live Jews in the world today.
