Highly highly recommend this book. One of the most compelling books I've read, and I can scarcely imagine how goddamn difficult it was to research and write.

3 inches of rain between 6 pm and 9 pm last night. At the heaviest point of the deluge, rain was falling at a rate of 6.76 inches/hour in the backyard.

Occurring under the radar of most of us unless you happened to be cued into this movement distributed throughout the country. Their goals are so outrageous they should be wrapped in a conspiracy theory. Instead, it is all too real.

Sunset with the sun filtered through several layers of clouds. Sky is slowly clearing up after frontal passage yesterday. Relieved temps have dropped with the front coming through. Both lovely and refreshingly cool.

Happened across this planter box of black-eyed susans in town today. It is in between several paved areas, in another town it may have remained untended and bare. But here it is an occasion to plant flowers. What makes this place special.

On August 3, 1981, two-thirds of all air traffic controllers walked off their jobs. More than 11,000 lost their jobs. It was a day than changed my worklife and that of every other controller regardless of their support or opposition to the strike.

My walk down from the top includes an abandoned road leading toward town where I finish with a post-walk Diet Coke. When the light is just right, I amble into a scene most prosaic.

Near the top of the mountain is a grove of Sycamores. Shaped and twisted over time by wind, rain, cold, snow and, most recently, Tropical Storm Helene, they prevail. Inspiring.

The Aleutian Island Police Blotter has been updated. Even in the middle of the work week inebriates are quelled. The police officer's style in her rendition of the blotter is evolving, including a sentence-long attempt at alliteration. www.facebook.com/profile.php?...

Foggy but less windy this morning on my walk up the mountain. This is on the way back down along an abandoned road that leads into town. Last year a bear and I encountered each other. Upon noticing each other, he continued on his way and I continued on mine.

One of my favorite parts of my morning walk up the mountain. Usually the sound of the ever-constant wind prevails here. In the distance are the ski lift mechanisms. The grassy area to the left is one of the ski runs but usually not used. This is at about 5,400' elevation, the top at 5,506'.

Looking west into Tennessee at the top of the mountain and the halfway point of my walk. Roan Mountain is just out of frame on the left, Johnson City out there hidden by mountain ridges. Smoke makes the blue of the Blue Ridge just a bit -- blue-er.

This house I pass on my morning walks has been under construction for more than two years. Construction was paused after Hurricane Helene passed through but still -- 2+ years? It is even more enormous than it looks, with that top gable looming at least 40 feet over the road I'm on. I call it Xanadu.
