Nah, it's in Norman medieval Latin. The thorns and eths were markers of the conquered people. They were still coming around to w back then.

This is a nice idea, but the 'goneth' ruins it. It's so jarring. I wish people would try just slightly harder with this kind of thing. And if there's one place I expect to find sympathy for this pointless peeve, it's here.
Pastiche of the Bayeux Tapestry with Harold, arrow in the eye, ouch. In letting like the Tapestry it says 'something in your eye? We can help treat it in store'. Then, 'should've goneth to Specsavers'.

13) Saint Etienne: He's on the phone Oh dear oh dear. This sort of thing was not uncommon, an earnest singer-songwriter having their song utterly torn to ribbons by a record label that clearly had no confidence in them. So despite a mild, low-energy performance, it's been sold as a… rave anthem?

To be honest, this song would be dull and plodding in any decade. You could administer it as a general anaesthetic, with a tempo that makes andante feel like a brisk jog and instruments that fart rather than parp. Score: 5/10, I guess. How did it go again? open.spotify.com/track/4ozucJ...

Zero Company is actually pretty great, but I'm severely let down by the paltry number of hats available. There's a couple of pilot helmets (none of the customisable characters get to fly the ship) 1bn clone helmets (you can't recruit new clones until 2/3 in), a salad dish and one pair of goggles.

Production quality is high, but a misplaced bit of Swing Revival, which never took off in the UK (and barely in the US). Bit ultimately PJ&D were never going to make it with only novelty songs, which is almost a pity. Almost. Score: 8/10, and I'm not sorry. open.spotify.com/track/5W0Tk4...

9) Tina Arena: Heaven Help my Heart With a performer name like that you'd expect a more expansive song than this tedious slip of nothing. Change the production, and you can imagine it being released back in the 70s or 80s, as 'adult contemporary' or something equally boring. Easy listening maybe.

He simply doesn't have the range or the power, and when Robbie Williams joins in at the end he really shows poor Howard up. There's a reason Gary did the majority of leads. Otherwise it's a decent song, with occasionally scrappy production. Score: 6/10 open.spotify.com/track/1WK7eL...

He clearly had enough clout to snap his fingers to summon up a gospel choir, and it's the latter part of the song where he's just singing back and forth with them that works best. They provide energy and joy, while Vandross's verses just sound dull. Score: 4/10 open.spotify.com/track/6ep87j...

The reggae beat and dips into Jamaican dialect aside, the lyrics bring this down. She apparently wants a 'shy guy' not to be a sensitive, caring partner, but more because she wants someone she has more control over and won't look at other women. Well. Score: 6/10 open.spotify.com/track/3ldG6X...

3) Diana King: Shy Guy Yeeeah that's more like it! Proper forgotten 90s shit, and a fascinating 'what if' curio. At first it seems like the sort of pop RnB TLC or Destiny's Child would perfect in the latter half of the decade, but King has a fearless will to bring Jamaican influences in.

Still, that choral sample still hits hard thirty years later and gives the song the gravitas that Coolio didn't have on his own terms. It's a big gothic anthem against gang culture, the kind that plays well with suburban whites who will buy the single while tutting to themselves. Score: 7/10. Tut.

2) Coolio: Gangsta's Paradise It's always awkward for a rapper to have a proper huge hit, same with metal bands. It takes away some of their cred. And rapping about what a tough gangsta life you have while Snoop, Dre and the like are going strong is a bit much. Coolio did the Kenan and Kel theme!

Its one saving grace is the explosion into life when the chorus breaks into the verse, but that's cold comfort. It's a bloated, flatulent dirge with a ridiculous 'ooga-chicka-oo' sample running throughout the beat to the point of utter irritation. Score: 3/10. And he can thank me for it.
