Serious Q Tom: You've written about your childhood. Me (age 75) and my four brothers had very dysfunctional family and all came out OK in the end. Is it because we lived in supportive environment / culture? Others provided the example? How do we do that in failing areas now? Can't be hopeless.

The death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person. The common good can be safeguarded and the requirements of justice can be met without recourse to capital punishment: effective systems of detention have been developed that protect citizens while at the same time do not completely deprive those who are guilty of the possibility of redemption.

This is the woman who received the Nobel Peace Prize over the Great United States of America, whose Representative, ME, settled eight Wars, and many other things. FWIW: theologically speaking, the NAE (which represents evangelicals w/different capital punishment views) coming out against this is a bigger deal than the USCCB (a tradition that explicitly condemns the death penalty, full stop). The fact that they’re using the same terms is quite a thing.

Who is my neighbor?
There was a scholar of the law who stood up to test Jesus and said,
"Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus said to him,
"What is written in the law? How do you read it?" He said in reply, "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself." He replied to him, "You have answered correctly; do this and you will live." But because he wished to justify himself, he said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"
