In short: Watch Blacklist. It is fun in many ways and the early seasons are great. Be aware it jumps the shark around seasons 4-5, and you should stop at 8. 9 and 10 are just dragging a dead horse short of the finish line, and you don't need to see that. Remember it proud and running, wild and free.

The Blacklist horse runs a good race, but they keep pushing until it collapses in a lather. Worse, they drag its carcass down the track to leave it before the finish line, where they leave it to die an awful, wheezing death. It never completes the run. It never truly wins. It simply dies, painfully.

Over and over they emphasize that the task force has done good. That they have made the world better for their presence and their work. But we'll never, ever see that. They give no hint to closure. Just a hollow end. A corpse in a pasture from an aerial shot. NBC ought to be ashamed.

Why the fuck did this make it out of the writer's room and onto the screen? What sort of fucking moron went, "Yeah lets end this great show (which had plenty of warts to go with it) with the suicide of the lead and give no room for grief, closure or worst of all -- hope.

I don't think that I have ever seen a series end on such a depressing, awful, bleak note. No closure or answers for the audience. We will never know what happens to the task force members, though we can assume their careers are in tatters and most of them will go to prison.

It dragged the entire series down with it. The series ends with him dead in a pasture in Spain, having courted death by a bull's horns. That's it. No post-script. Nothing for closure. Just a distance shot of Ressler picking up a hat and tossing it on Reddington's body.

Seasons 9 and 10 were a pathetic cash grab, and while there were a couple of choice episodes and a lot of wonderful Spader doing his thing, watching Reddington decay from mastermind in control to spiral down into grief and depression and become a shell of himself...

James Spader is a gift. I don't blame Megan Boone for anything that happened here, and I don't blame her for wanting an exit after her character has backslid into the same toddler crying every season. But while Blacklist on the whole is overall enjoyable, it should have ended at 8.

Also the entire Wujing plot wouldn't have been possible with Amar there to monitor what the fuck was going on, and thus he had to be benched, despite that he was the living, beating heart of the team, and so the Season was lesser for his absence. They removed a character to allow for a bad plot.

Amar, with his years of therapy and his own struggles with depression, anxiety, and mental health. Alina, who's mother died seeking escape from the world, with her own dark struggle with violence and acceptance... these two would have clocked it. But they ALL should have.

It hurt that a bunch of FBI agents didn't fucking figure it out, either. I honestly think that's why they benched Amar and brought in Herbie as the "adorable nerd" and sent out Alina in favor of Siya. The walking wounded know their own.

The "garage sale" was terribly difficult to watch. If you've ever seen a suicidal person liquidate their things, giving stuff to friends, selling it off so that there won't be as much financial burden on friends or family, to make sure they have things to remember them by... it hurt to see it here.

Season 10 Reddington wants to die in shame due to his failure. He failed to protect Keen from both himself and herself. He holds to Agnes for a shot at his one ray of light through his dark work. He puts his life on the line to save Dembe, knowing that will potentially kill him.

A Raven called Crow @ravenwhowrites.etheirys.social · 18/09/2026
If you've ever known someone who is seeking to end their own life, with intent and planning, Reddington shows all the signs early on. He insulates himself. He does not allow himself comforts or nice things. He becomes rootless, no home and no safety. He is DARING the world to kill him.

A Raven called Crow @ravenwhowrites.etheirys.social · 18/09/2026
I firmly believe that Season 8 should have been the final seasons. Watching Season 9 and 10 be defined by Reddington's spiral into depression and grief, later to slowly dismantle his own empire... It was painful, especially season 10.

A Raven called Crow @ravenwhowrites.etheirys.social · 18/09/2026
Reddington is blinded by love. He is a fool, unseeing of all the red flags before him because he has made a Keen of his own mind, raised her up on a pedestal she did not earn or deserve. Keen is hungry for validation on a scale that is boggling, and it is both self-serving and self-destructive.
100 1
A Raven called Crow @ravenwhowrites.etheirys.social · 18/09/2026
Keen never recognizes or admits her good fortune. She refuses to accept that her mother put her where she was because she loved her. She keeps asking for more, more, more until she finally gets it all, including what Reddington was protecting her from, and it kills her.
100 1
A Raven called Crow @ravenwhowrites.etheirys.social · 18/09/2026
Dembe and Keen both have their flaws and blind spots where Reddington is concerned, though Dembe seeks to find himself in faith, in learning, in becoming the person he wants to be, while Keen looks at her DNA and not what she's personally made of herself under the care of a loving adoptive father.
100 1
A Raven called Crow @ravenwhowrites.etheirys.social · 18/09/2026
Despite also coming out of tragedy as a child, Keen never recognizes her good fortune. She never sees herself as what she is: someone who had a bad hand dealt, but with the love of the man who took her in she made herself something amazing: FBI Profiler! Education, skill, position, influence, money.
100 1
A Raven called Crow @ravenwhowrites.etheirys.social · 18/09/2026
Someone came into Dembe's life and saw him for what he was: a child in need of a parent, a student in need of a mentor. Dembe is Reddington's dutiful son and a counterpoint to Elizabeth Keen's selfishness -- he stays with Reddington out of love. He knows he is lucky to be loved and cherished.
100 1
A Raven called Crow @ravenwhowrites.etheirys.social · 18/09/2026
Instead, she keeps reverting to biology, to DNA, to nature over nurture. But Reddington constantly refutes that. Dembe is a prime example -- a young black man, trafficked and abused -- who with love and support goes on to fucking CAMBRIDGE. NUTURE made that. Not NATURE.

To no available. He hands her an empty gun, but she just keeps demanding bullets to put it in. The truth as she WANTS it, not as it actually IS. She can never except that there are never, ever truly satisfying answers to the DNA mystery. That she is who she makes he

Reddington understands found family, but he also understands why she wants the truth. But letting her have the truth is also like handing a loaded gun to a toddler: someone is going to get shot eventually, and he would rather it be himself than the toddler.
100 1
A Raven called Crow @ravenwhowrites.etheirys.social · 18/09/2026
Keen never learns that lesson. No matter the insistence on the theme of found family, the task force being a found family, Keen never respects it. Never truly takes part of it, and instead swallows the lie of biological determinism: I must know what my DNA donors are, so I can know myself.
110 1
A Raven called Crow @ravenwhowrites.etheirys.social · 18/09/2026
Adopted kids learn early on that family is found, made. You are together because you love each other. Because you can depend on each other. Reddington offers that bond and she constantly rebuffs it. He gives her what he can (though he's balls about it) while also trying to keep them both safe.
100 1
A Raven called Crow @ravenwhowrites.etheirys.social · 18/09/2026
Keen is reckless, immature, self-centered, and selfish. She puts her own wants over everyone -- including Reddington -- while never ever learning the thing that most adopted kids learn early on: family is not biological. The DNA doesn't matter. It gives you some answers, but not all.
100 1
A Raven called Crow @ravenwhowrites.etheirys.social · 18/09/2026
Despite everything, despite all that -- she constantly puts her own child at risk. Despite the fact that she knows that her mother put her own life on the line to keep Keen safe. To protect her. She ignores all the warnings about what that can mean to continually pursue her own agenda.

A Raven called Crow @ravenwhowrites.etheirys.social · 18/09/2026
The show becomes a mess. The cases are fun and the interpersonal drama and subplots are excellent. The characters are fun! (I would die for Amar.) But they are all overshadowed by one woman going "why can't you tell me why you love me?" for like, 6 years.
100 1
A Raven called Crow @ravenwhowrites.etheirys.social · 18/09/2026
She puts herself, her husband, and her child at risk. Over and over again, against everyone's advice and the other actions taken to insulate her from the greater dangers. Thus, Blacklist jumped the shark when she announces herself as Masha Restova and sets the next four seasons in motion.
100 1
A Raven called Crow @ravenwhowrites.etheirys.social · 18/09/2026
So while we're enjoying fun mysteries, creative crimes, some interpersonal ensemble drama on the task force, Elizabeth remains static. She does not learn from her experiences. She continually asks for more. She makes wild and reckless choices.
100 1
A Raven called Crow @ravenwhowrites.etheirys.social · 18/09/2026
The four short years she had with Masha and her husband was a glimpse of what could have been. But she never internalized or learned from it. It was still not much more than an assignment to her... except for Masha. She loved her daughter, and that singular bond to the child she had was miraculous.

Katarina was raised to be a spy. To be a criminal. To know no other life but service to a greater power. Her own father handled her assignments -- including ordering her to sleep with and seduce marks. She has only the barest glimpse of what family life could have been like.

A Raven called Crow @ravenwhowrites.etheirys.social · 18/09/2026
Marvin was right. She was unfit and unworthy. She was never going to be the next Reddington because she wanted love and family and home and comfort. Redarina, never had those things, and thus, was totally unequipped to deal with someone who had those things and had a life built around them.
100 1
A Raven called Crow @ravenwhowrites.etheirys.social · 18/09/2026
(I am also convinced that Katarina had her own memories altered when she altered Keen's, to better 'become' Raymond, who she loved.) She is blind to her good fortune. He is blind to her flaws. It's a fatal combination. Mr Kaplan was right: he can't protect her from himself, or her from herself
100 1
A Raven called Crow @ravenwhowrites.etheirys.social · 18/09/2026
To be sure I'm not absolving Reddington's involvement here. Reddington as Katarina makes total sense, and his love is so deep and so vast that he built an empire for a heir who doesn't know what that could mean. He is blind to her inability to handle that empire, to mature into it.
100 1
A Raven called Crow @ravenwhowrites.etheirys.social · 18/09/2026
I get that. I really do. But she's over 30. She needs to have been to a point in her adult life to handle her shit. Get therapy. She was a fucking profiler, for fuck's sake. Worked in psych. Did Reddington cause problems? YES. Did Tom? YES. But that wasn't ever enough. Elizabeth got greedy.
100 1
A Raven called Crow @ravenwhowrites.etheirys.social · 18/09/2026
Time and time she is given the answer: Reddington may not be her biological father, but he is the mentor and father figure she desperately wanted. But every time she's warned off doing something more to get an answer she WANTS instead of accepting her good fortune in being loved, she wants more.
100 1
A Raven called Crow @ravenwhowrites.etheirys.social · 18/09/2026
Elizabeth was planning to adopt, and I'm going to be frank: she would have been an unsuitable candidate. She was fixated on her own loss, her own parents, and would never be properly prepared to deal with an adopted child's needs emotionally because she wasn't able to handle her own.
100 1
A Raven called Crow @ravenwhowrites.etheirys.social · 18/09/2026
So we have Elizabeth, who had a loving Dad who was a former career criminal, and now this dude who might be her dad, or some guy that stole the life of her dad, or so on and so forth. Her mother remains the only firm figure in her life, she is the unquestionable daughter of Katarina Rostova.

My bio father initially welcomed me, but eventually grew bitter that the only biological child of his that was even vaguely successful in life was the daughter he didn't raise. They're out of my life now, and found family is the family I have.

At some point, as an adopted person, you have to accept that you don't and will never have the answers. But the spit test genetic testing became available and I did it, and found that my Dad was alive and my mother wasn't. This is why Keen's struggle resonated so loudly -- and why she angered me.

A Raven called Crow @ravenwhowrites.etheirys.social · 18/09/2026
That's what I believed for forty years, until I found my own Raymond Reddington and found out that for forty years I'd been fed lies and none of that was even vaguely fucking true. I'm not sure why my 'parents' manufactured this bullshit - my mother was deeply mentally ill - but they did.
100 1
A Raven called Crow @ravenwhowrites.etheirys.social · 18/09/2026
I was adopted. I didn't know who my parents were and my adoptive parents were abusive. My 'mother' (term used loosely) abused me because she believed I was the product of an affair of her ex-husband that she'd managed to get custody of when his affair partner agreed to adopt the baby out.

The "mystery" of Reddington at the core of the series should have been 'resolved' far earlier than it was -- they seeded enough clues, but gave us three red herrings to divert and confuse. The Bones, Ilya, and Constantin were too much, and frankly, Keen going through the motions got insulting.
100 1
A Raven called Crow @ravenwhowrites.etheirys.social · 18/09/2026
Blacklist was a fun show early on. We had mysteries and backstabbing and more mysteries, a powerful confident criminal in his element. Twists and turns abounded. Who was Raymond Reddington, and why was Elizabeth Keen so important? The problem is that this question was circled way too many times.

Now that I've finished the #Blacklist I have a lot of opinions. Spoilers ahead. Also if you're upset by the real stories of adopted people, buckle up or back off. Suicide is a factor in the series, so come in prepared if you actually want to read my ranting.
