This week a cross was set on fire in Grant Park, right in the heart of downtown Chicago. For over 100 years the KKK has burned crosses to terrorize and intimidate Black communities. Those cross burnings were often accompanied by lynchings. So to see something like this in my city is horrifying.

I was today years old when I learned that the Heritage Foundation had a Black woman president from 2018-2021. Her name is Kay Coles James and she has spent her entire career curating conservative policies, first under Ronald Reagan and later under George H.W. Bush.

As a Black Jew, moments like this remind me why an intersectional lens is critical. This synagogue has long been a symbol of Black and Jewish solidarity. As both the only synagogue in Jackson and the largest synagogue in Mississippi, it carries tremendous symbolic weight.
