For all that it’s bankrupting us, I’m glad my wife’s out of game dev. This shit is everywhere. :(

All of us are beginners at some point. I signed work for hire contracts for children's stories early in my career. I wish I hadn't. Spread the information.

Mystery solved: Analog, like Azimov's and F&SF, was recently acquired by a predatory acquisitions company called (cue the Irony Bell) "Must Read Magazines." MRM is revising their "terms" so as to acquire as many IP rights as they can gank. Fuck 'em. Boycott. locusmag.com/2025/02/anal...

Oh, they made a show of it? Interesting. I didn’t think it popular enough for that. I thought you were maybe listening to an audio book.

When I was still teaching, my middle school students LOVED that series. If you approach it from a middle school intro to fantasy mind, much like Eragon, it’s not too bad.

I've only run into two that were scams that I know of. Most of those I'm seeing on LinkedIn are legit and for legit companies that I've actually heard of. But yeah, it's rough.

Looking for remote work in: editing, technical writing/editing, content writing/management, curriculum development, test development/assessment, teaching, & copywriting. If you know of something, let me know. I'll even consider graphic & web design. I have pro experience in it all. 2/2

This job market is wild. I can't think of a time in my entire life where anyone I know applied for over 100 jobs in a short time with no traction. In the three weeks I've been actively looking, I've applied for 115 positions and its so many crickets out there... 1/

This image is from #Inktober 2019, but with today being the anniversary of losing our kitty, DiNozzo, it seems fitting to share the art piece I did of him exploring space. He may be space dust but he's forever traveling this reality. ❤ Whose your favorite kitty, fictional or real?

A black cat in an astronaut suit is flying in space above an Earth-like planet. This is an Inktober painting from 2019 by artist Raven Oak.

Stephen King’s IT, particularly the mini-series. Watching it on TV as a kid and it scared the hell out of me. I still don’t like clowns.

It’s sad that smaller cons in Seattle have handled ramps better than decades of WorldCons. I had bruises for a week from the doors slamming into me and my chair at Seattle WorldCon. So frustrating.

Raven Oak @ravenoak.bsky.social · 03/10/2026

“The backstage area is for walking participants only.” 🤬 Whatever WorldCon person said that should never be allowed anywhere near a con again. WorldCon has proven yet again to be ableist AF. *sigh* Just because we’re disabled doesn’t mean we’re less than. Argh. 🤬

Raven Oak @ravenoak.bsky.social · 03/10/2026

I worried that’s what happened. Get freaking ramps. Did LA Con learn nothing from Seattle WorldCon, et. al?

I read through all the stories while the electricians were working and loved every story. I thought I knew what to expect from the collection but these stories surpassed my expectations in every way. I wish we had a full antho like the 99 tiny terrors... 99 tiny gods! Seriously.

I’m about to do that on purpose. Apparently I moved to *that* neighborhood where everyone goes wild. I’ve been told to expect 300-400 trick-or-treaters. O_o

I spent my elementary school years in Gainesville while my dad attended UofF. It’s also where, as a grad student & TA, he began dating his younger students. UofF certainly didn’t care, so I’m not surprised they have a track record of defending folks they shouldn’t. :(

We’re watching the wind over here to see how it does. Lots of folks say south Whidbey gets lots of power outages. We plan to get a generator in October but for now, we’re riding the lightning! 😂

Oh and explore day and night. Get a feel for it all. I loved lower Queen Anne’s proximity to the Space Needle area and the water. Loved the isolated city feel of Magnolia, especially the water. Loved visiting Ballard for the beaches. Bothell sucked imho. Wasn’t a fan of Eastside. Loving the island.

Raven Oak @ravenoak.bsky.social · 26/09/2026

I’ve lived in lower Queen Anne, Magnolia, and next door to Lynnwood in Bothell. (Now I’m on Whidbey Island) It depends upon what you want out of a neighborhood. Go drive through the hoods. Park and walk around. Explore.
