More resources, less microbial diversity
Nature Reviews Microbiology, Published online: 04 August 2026; doi:10.1038/s41579-026-01356-1In a recent study, Shalev and colleagues demonstrate that enhanced resource diversity in microbial communities can reduce microbial biodiversity, challenging current ecological theories.

Our new paper is out in Nature Ecology & Evolution. We show that increasing nutrient diversity can enhance microbial resource uptake, intensify competition, and ultimately reduce biodiversity. doi.org/10.1038/s415...

New paper out in ISMEJ! Microbes can "remember" their past by modifying their environment. This externalized memory can impact future interactions and community assemblies. academic.oup.com/ismej/advanc...

Environment-mediated interactions cause an externalized and collective memory in bacteria
Abstract. Bacteria usually live in complex communities interacting with many other microbial species. These interactions determine who can persist in a com

More resources, less diversity? Our new preprint reveals that increasing resource diversity can reduce microbial biodiversity—contrary to classical ecological theory. Luckily, we understood why this happens. Read more: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... #MicrobialEcology #Biodiversity

Emergent loss of microbial biodiversity with increasing resource diversity
The origin of biodiversity is arguably the most fundamental question in ecology - especially how countless microbial species coexist within a single community. A prevailing hypothesis holds that micro...
