🧵 We tend to think the internet is permanent, but VANISHING CULTURE—the new 📚 from Internet Archive—starts with a simple reality: our digital record is far more fragile than we think 🕳️ 📖 Read for free: archive.org/details/vani... 🛒 Purchase in print: www.betterworldbooks.com/product/deta... ⬇️
Book cover titled “Vanishing Culture” on a teal background. Pixel-art style graphics show a VHS tape, open book, film reel, chain link, and vinyl record dissolving into digital fragments. At the bottom, a cursor icon points to the word “SAVE,” alongside an archive-style building icon, evoking digital preservation.

Think Twice Before Buying or Using Meta’s Ray-Bans
Over the last decade or so, the tech industry has tried, and mostly failed, to make “smart glasses”—tech-infused glasses with cameras, AI, maps, displays, and more—a thing. But over the past year,

Banking was never built for collectives. Savings circles were. ROSCAs have helped communities access lump sums without loans or credit for generations, a $500B+ market running on trust. We've brought this model online. Free session, early look at Bread Stacks. Link in our bio!

Given that said fraction, as you say, exists as a bulwark against economic democracy.. What I've found useful in my own life (poor) and work (DAO operator) is just practicing economic democracy. I have to cooperate to eat. So do my peers. "Picking a team" costs, but setting healthy boundaries pays.

2025 was a rough year for crypto speculation. But it was an incredible year for crypto-led solidarity. Over 30,000 in yield distributed to member organizations, all thanks to the support of BREAD holders around the world.

How it works: Every month, the Bread Solidarity Fund distributes generated yield. 50% split equally among all members, 50% allocated based on $BREAD holder votes. Baking BREAD = voting power to support causes that matter to you.

Or are you just using bitcoin as your strawman because it's the only network that your criticism applies to? (likely because it's the only argument you know, and you're really just arguing based on your emotional biases rather than fact and material analysis, which would make you a reactionary)

rathermercurial.eth @rathermercurial.bsky.social · 02/12/2024
The easiest way to navigate around all the weird shit is to focus on spaces where people are actually building things and helping people. IME most of the internet weirdos don't actually show up to build and help out, so it's easy to avoid them that way.

I'm in the central valley and new "market-rate" homes are *starting* at 650k. Newly built rentals are ~2.6k/4k for apartments/small houses. Working class jobs pay $15-25/hr. We have plenty of housing. What we need is affordable prices.

fr though. Tbh this is why I've stayed off bsky until now. And it's pretty cringe to find more of the same Twitter garbage here. Do these keyboard warriors realize that IRL leftists, and online leftists who actually *work* at prefiguring together, don't act like this? Just childish tbh.

The saddest part of leftist cowardice when it comes to difficult topics is that tons of people will be attracted to these spaces, and find only centrist and far-right POV's and communities. The problem isn't just ceding cultural territory, but abandoning folks to alt-right echo chambets as well.

The AI hatred on this website is insane. There are meaningful conversations to have around consent, scabbing, unemployment, social upheaval - all of these will HAVE TO be talked about, it's coming, and instead, the left is just abandoning reality and leaving it to the right to shape it.

You have to end capitalism first, otherwise nothing else works. ↳ Not communism ↳ Not anarchism (a synonym for Marx’ conception of the former) ↳ Not libertarianism (a synonym for the former, coined by French socialists, later misappropriated to a mostly American, neoliberal movement)
