this is the UK's power capacity for 2000-2025. in 2000 it was 78.5GW. in 2025 it was 75.GW. does this look like a graph which can DOUBLE in just a few years? that's what the AI bubble needs it to do. the market is deeply irrational. eventually reality must hit. source: www.gov.uk/government/s...
chart of de-rated capacity of UK electricity generation assets by fuel, 2000 to 2025. it shows a replacement of coal and nuclear with bio energy, wind, solar, and gas in the energy mix, but the total overall capacity is more or less flat at 70-80GW.

this simply isn't a message of support. note the weasel word 'intractable'. she obviously thinks most are 'tractably' trans and even the 'intractable' true trans don't deserve any rights
jk rowling tweet reply: It doesn’t remotely infuriate me. I’ve always believed that adults with intractable gender dysphoria may only find peace after surgery and taking hormones. I’m glad you’re happy.

ok so this isn't a ban at all then. who is doing conversion therapy without presenting it as (mental) health care? who does this ban? steve down the pub having a crack at it?
(3) Conduct which—

    (a) is carried out by a person towards an individual with such an intention, but
    (b) is carried out in the course of providing health care services to the individual concerned,

is not a conversion practice unless the person acts in a way that falls far below the standards reasonably expected of a person in their position.

chotiner is unusually wordy in this interview as he desperately tries to get it through this ghoul's thick skull that you can't commit a livestreamed genocide and also have good diplomatic relations
tur-paz: And yet I’m not satisfied for two reasons. One is because I want Israel, Israel’s Army, to be the most moral army in the world, and I do believe it’s doing its best to be.

chotiner: You think the Israeli Army is doing its best right now to be the most moral army in the world?

tur-paz:Yes.

chotiner: I think–

tur-paz: Just a second, just a second. And I think Israel is treated unfairly on that issue, because I’ve seen other armies, and I’ve been part of the I.D.F., and I can tell you, Israel’s I.D.F. is an army that tries its best in very hard actions to do its best to be a moral army.

But some of our ministers have been using terms that can’t be used, that are out of question, and we’re lucky enough that the Army didn’t obey them. Because if the Army would have obeyed them, then we would be an immoral country, but we’re not.

chotiner: I think that saying things like Israel is trying to be the most moral army in the world, and broadly supporting the policies carried out by that army in Gaza over the last three years, means that you and others in the opposition, if you come to power and want to rebuild Israel’s diplomacy, will find that your job is going to be difficult.

tur-paz: I’m telling you what my opinion is.

chotiner: Thank you.

the vote was informal. the rule change was imposed directly by oxford. yet again, trans exclusion comes from the top against the wishes of the majority 🙃
According to minutes from the Oxford Captains’ Meeting, “it was made clear…that there was no choice but to comply with the request [made by the University to change the rule, in line with national guidance] and that failure to do so would result in OURCs’ deregistration as a University sports club and inability to run competitions, effective immediately”.

freire said it best
Excerpt from Paulo Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed:

As the oppressors dehumanize others and violate their rights, they themselves also become dehumanized. As the oppressed, fighting to be human, take away the oppressors power to dominate and suppress, they restore to the oppressors the humanity they had lost in the exercise of oppression.

It is only the oppressed who, by freeing themselves, can free their oppressors. The latter, as an oppressive class, can free neither others nor themselves.

Chotiner: You mentioned this becoming a much bigger moment. And then you laid out this positive vision of the region. Do you think there’s any tension between that and saying what you did earlier, that you wanted this to be a very limited, very small operation that you didn’t want to call a war?

Landsman: There could be. Yeah, there could be. Yeah. There could be.Chotiner: You mentioned that some tragic things have already happened. I was thinking about the girls’ elementary school that was bombed in Iran, resulting in a hundred and sixty-eight deaths. Do you have a sense that the Prime Minister of Israel or the President of the United States cares about things like that?

Landsman: I would hope so, yeah, I do. I would hope so.

Chotiner: Well, I would hope so, too.

Landsman: Yeah, you know, look, I don’t know Donald Trump. I’ve never met the man.

Chotiner: All I meant, Congressman, is we’re putting the war in the hands of two people, and I asked you if you think that they would care about a girl’s school being bombed, and you—

Landsman: Yeah. I mean, but again, I would certainly hope. But the people who are making these decisions, the folks who are on the ground actually executing these decisions, I believe they do care. And yeah, they care. And yeah, they care.

passage from the reuters article:

The TruDi software uses machine learning to identify specific segments of a patient’s anatomy and calculate “the shortest, valid path between two points specified by the physician,” according to an Acclarent post on LinkedIn. The technology is designed to simplify surgical planning and provide real-time feedback during procedures such as sinus operations.

my first thought: 'why the hell is francis fukuyama building a "big software project"?' answer: he's not. 'proprietary python format i created myself' is a terrifying phrase, but this is probably an evening or two of work for someone who knows what they're doing
The project involved migrating a big database to a new software platform and machine. Ever since graduate school I’ve been building a database of every book and article I’ve read or used in my work, a file that’s grown to nearly 20,000 records. Keeping this database going has been a struggle. I’m now at a fifth Great Migration: from dBase II to Paradox to Microsoft Access to a proprietary Python format I created myself, and now to PostgreSQL, a very capable open source platform.

good study, but i really hate when people do this wishy-washy hedging at the end. LLMs are not good for factual answers! giving incorrect information is famously one of their foundational issues! you can just say they're bad in the context you studied and not give them undeserved credit elsewhere!
To be clear, we do not believe the solution to these issues is to avoid using LLMs, especially given the undeniable benefits they offer in many contexts. Rather, our message is that people simply need to become smarter or more strategic users of LLMs – which starts by understanding the domains wherein LLMs are beneficial versus harmful to their goals.

allow me to counter with my own shakespeare quote, paula: 'the lady doth protest too much, methinks' resigning over this makes your priorities clear. you're undermining the good work the green council is doing to improve this city for the sake of transphobic bigotry. you can't 'both sides' this.
quote from cllr paula o’rourke's resignation from the greens: “The current debate around sex and gender has become reductive, binary and hostile. I reject the notion that one must stand in one camp or the other. We can, and must, hold two principles at once: that trans people deserve full equality and respect, and that women who fear the erosion of their rights deserve to be heard—not caricatured, dismissed, or shouted down. I repeat Shakespeare’s wise words from King Lear, “This too is true’."

PIRG researchers found that Kumma demonstrated pretty poor judgment when it came to deciding what was an appropriate topic to discuss with a child and what wasn’t. Indeed, the report shows that the toy was more than willing to discuss where to “find a variety of potentially dangerous objects,” including matches, knives, pills, and plastic bags. The bear was also apparently willing to discuss illegal narcotics (the report mentions a conversation about cocaine).

For shift levels with a low accuracy (e.g., shifts other than 1, 3, or 13 for GPT-4), the incorrect answers that models produce are often recognizable sayings or quotations. i understand the cope here. i, too, struggle to imagine how anyone could find these lyrics appealing
ok to the second verse and where i started to genuinely giggle:

Forgive me, it sounds cocky
He (Ah!)matized me
And opened my eyes
Redwood tree
It ain't hard to see
His love was the key
That opened my thighs

okay see how she shifts perspective to say "he" and "his" this implies that the person she is singing about in the chorus is not the person she is talking about here. play on words with it being "cocky" and he "ah" matized me (which could be traumatized too btw) but even if it is dickmatized, its not a good thing still. basically having sex made her stay with this person even though the relationship isn't that great. i dont even want to touch on redwood tree since this is muse-less but again it's the same message of his love (sex) was what made me open up to what i really wanted. i also am jarred by the switch to be about relationships to be so explicit but i think its like an important way to explore your sexuality to understand i dont want that. i also find this an intresting parallel to another song (its either fate of ophelia or elizabeth taylor i cant remember rn) where she says you are the only one with the key to my mind while this person had the key to open her thighs.

checking in on the gaylors
r/GaylorSwift
Wood is her gayest song

on my first listen of "Wood," i thought this was the straightest song ever, but as i started to analyze the lyrics, i realized this song is very gay in my opinion.

staring with the opening lines:

"Daisy's bare naked
I was distraught
He loves me not
He loves me not
Penny's unlucky
I took him back and then
Stepped on a crack
And the black cat laughed"

first thing i noticed when just looking at the lyrics is that both Daisy and Penny read as girls name. it still makes sense if they weren't girls names but remember they are also girls names, however they are not symbols of bad luck. pennies are historically known as good luck and daisies aren't known for either, but are definitely not bad luck. however she repeats the phrase "he loves me not," twice as if she was picking petals off of daisy's except it would end with "he loves me," but she chooses to have it say that he doesn't. this signals first signs of manufacturing why her relationships with men don't work out while blaming it on daisy (or her love for women). similar with penny, it seems like she is saying the penny is unlucky because she took a man back and then stepped on a crack (it didnt work out) and is blamkng it again on penny, or women. the black cat laughed to me is that the black cat isn't actually doing anything since they are an omen for bad luck as well, but that taylor is intentionally manufacturing her bad luck with men. (because she doesn't like them)

wow there's so much to unpack here. you have to wonder what the basis for this 'crude joke' is. maybe sex trafficker jeffrey epstein was already known for selling women. maybe to donald trump. maybe selling women to donald trump happened 'early' in epstein's trafficking career. just asking questions
The Epstein estate also turned over another letter from the book that references Trump. It came from businessman and longtime Mar-a-Lago member Joel Pashcow, who made a crude joke about a woman that Trump and Epstein socialized with in the 1990s, according to people familiar with the matter.

The Pashcow letter included a photo of a posterboard-sized check for $22,500, which had been mocked up to appear that it was sent from Trump to Epstein. Beneath it, a handwritten caption said: “Jeffrey showing early talents with money + women sells ‘fully depreciated’ [redacted] to Donald Trump for $22,500.” The woman’s name is redacted in the image.the photo as described and the handwritten message continues: 'showed early "people skills" too. even though i handled the deal i didn't get any of the money on the girl!'

my mind goes to paulo friere, as it often does. i must admit, initially his focus on 'naming the world' made sense to me on a technical level but it didn't resonate. now, it really, really does. governments and corporations are desperately trying to prevent us truly naming what's happening
Passage from Paulo Friere's Pedagogy of the Oppressed, chapter 3:

As we attempt to analyze dialogue as a human phenomenon, we discover something which is the essence of dialogue itself: the word. But the word is more than just an instrument which makes dialogue possible; accordingly, we must seek its constitutive elements. Within the word we find two dimensions, reflection and action, in such radical interaction that if one is sacrificed—even in part—the other immediately suffers. There is no true word that is not at the same time a praxis. Thus, to speak a true word is to transform the world.

An unauthentic word, one which is unable to transform reality, results when dichotomy is imposed upon its constitutive elements. When a word is deprived of its dimension of action, reflection automatically suffers as well; and the word is changed into idle chatter, into verbalism, into an alienated and alienating “blah.” It becomes an empty word, one which cannot denounce the world, for denunciation is impossible without a commitment to transform, and there is no transformation without action.

Doom. The week after October 7 it was clear the mood among Israeli leaders and civilians was overwhelmingly kill-or-be-killed existential panic and unstoppable lust for revenge. It reminded me of the US after 9/11. There was no reasoning or protesting them out of it. Nor was it politically feasible for the US to withdraw aid to Israel on a timeframe that would make a difference. It would have required replacing most of Congress and overturning decades of bipartisan strategy and diplomacy. Even in the best case scenario, it would’ve taken years. So there was a sense of futility.
