Imagine being a physicist in the 1920s trying to figure why electrons seemed to have an extra degree of freedom for which there was no classical analog. So you call it spin because you can picture that. As Tomonaga says it, it involved a lot of groping in the dark. 🧪

🧪 I've just had a brain wave! Specifically one of the form:
Equation: open square bracket, open parenthesis one over sigma plus one over v times partial derivative with respect to t, close parenthesis squared minus three halves times the Laplacian, close square bracket, acting on Psi, equals one over sigma squared times f superscript o dot Z. doi:10.1152/jn.00406.2019

Nazi scientists working on atomic weapons did however use relativity as you can't get far in nuclear physics without it. Firing all the Jewish physicists was a blow to their nuclear weapons program, and a boon to the USA's own program with the exiled German Jewish scientists at their disposal. 🧪

Recently discovered that the nazis rejected Einstein's theory of relativity as "Jüdische Physik" and founded their own "Deutsche Physik" which, rejecting relativity, was of course just wrong. 🧪

I bet if you told, say, the ancient Greeks that actually lead is really toxic and then told them we also invented/discovered something way more dangerous called radiation, and then you told them lead protects you from radiation they'd be like OH COME ON

I'm gonna do some little deep dive threads into the Unruh effect and quantum field theory in general. I want to try convert the maths into words for max accessibility but also try avoid making it sound too vague and fanciful. Probably super easy to do. Anyway follow if this sounds cool to you! 🧪

Hopefully I don't get sued for reproducing this but it really is one of the most informative bits of text about quantum mechanics I have come across, from Carroll's 'An Introduction to General Relativity'. 🧪
Screenshot of text: "Strictly speaking, quantum mechanics is just different from classical mechanics; it is by no means necessary to start with a classical model and “quantize” it. Nevertheless, we usually do exactly that. Even for simple classical models, there is more than one way to construct a quantized version; these include canonical quantization and path-integral quantization, as well as more exotic procedures. What is worse, there is no simple map between classical and quantum theories; there are classical theories with no well-defined quantum counterpart, classical theories with multiple quantum versions, and quantum theories without any classical analogue"

"Without understanding the physics, mathematics does not answer your questions. Without understanding the mathematics, your physics theories will not work successfully either, is what we had to discover (and we keep forgetting time and again)." - ’t Hooft arxiv.org/pdf/1503.05007 🧪

Well particles experiencing an electromagnetic force are therefore in a way 'detecting' them. I don't know why they have that name but lots of physics stuff is named by physicists who are nerds

Loosely put, it is a photon responsible for the presence of the electromagnetic force; electrons exchanging virtual photons is the repelling force between them. They only exist inside these force mediating roles, can't be detected by us, can also be thought of as 'just' a mathematical invention 🧪

This spacetime diagram morphing is a mathematical picture of viewing events in spacetime from different inertial frames of reference. Here we see how events that occur simultaneously in one inertial frame (on a line parallel to the x-axis) do not necessarily happen simultaneously in another 🧪

A nice easy one for Monday from J Hartle's Gravity 🧪
A block of test that reads: A 20-m pole is carried so fast in the direction of its length that it appears to be only 10 m long in the laboratory frame. The runner carries the pole trough the front door of a barn 10 m long. Just at the instant the head of the pole reaches the closed rear door, the front door can be closed, enclosing pole within the 10-m barn for an instant. The rear door opens and the runner goes through. From the runner’s point of view, however, the pole is 20 m long and the barn is only 5 m! Thus the pole can never be enclosed in the barn. Explain, quantitatively and by means of spacetime diagrams, the apparent paradox.

In what sense does the Higgs field give particles mass? The standard model of particle physics is actually complete without Higgs, if all the particles moved at the speed of light. But only massless particles can move at light speed 🧪

What is the relationship between these two equations of gravitational potential energy we learn in school? I'd tell but I have the flu 🧪
Two equations, the top is gravitational potential energy equals mass times gravitational acceleration constant G times height. Second equation the gravitational potential energy equals minus g times mass-one times mass-two all over R

Exactly :) Perhaps I'll post the spacetime diagram later where it becomes visually clear, but essentially to the runner the rear door opens before the front door shuts, so to him he was never enclosed in the barn

Here different frames correspond to travelling at a velocity relative to a stationary frame. You can see at the bottom of the graph values of speed are given as fractions of the speed of light c. This is special relativity, a 'special' case of general relativity where we ignore gravity

I didn't add an alt text because it never works for videos on bsky. The spacetime diagram in the video is a 2d axis where position in space is the X axis and position in time is the y axis. The angle between the axes is shown shifting from 90 to smaller angles, a transformation of inertial frames

Because time runs slower as gravity gets stronger, over a 100 year period a person living on the ground floor lives a few microseconds longer than someone on the top floor. 🧪⌛
