Maybe they're doing a subversion kinda thing where they're like "let's start this like a Silent Hill game and then subvert it into XYZ" but I don't know how necessary I think that is. I don't ask of them to copy 2R 1:1, only to be consistent within themselves.

the newer games at least imho are in their experimentation determined to mix in elements that don't even feel like they fit the genre. and notably! both prove they absolutely know what they're doing with their first thirds being genuinely outstanding and creepy as shit

and in Townfall thusfar there's some middle room between SH2R and "unarmed section where you have to throw bottles to distract enemies off a linear path to sneak your way to a hospital"

but for F there's some middle room somewhere between SH2R's formula and having 4 cyst monsters a level occasionally accompanied by a forced fight with a wave of enemies because it killed the game for me in real time

don't get me wrong! SH2R is admittedly one of my favorite games of all time but I'm not coming at this from a mindset of "it's not 2 so it's bad". It would be really stupid and a harmful mindset for the series.

sh: townfall is pretty baller so far, had PC issues yesterday or I would've played more so still early on. gameplay is maybe a little bit too stealth centric at times, I'd debatably put it in the same spectrum as F but on the other end of the spectrum of "what if SH was a little bit too Not SH"

on my SHf replay I think almost a year since it released? I can't remember mainly playing because I never tried the patch where they turned down a lot of the excess encounters in endgame which sounds really good forgot how gorgeous the atmosphere is and how good the writing is in this game

also, at least from my perspective it manages to hit this really cool juxtaposition between the paper pusher types behind the scenes and the direct results being life or death on the ground I like a lot. even with how expressive and comedic the chars can act there's a ton of weight in the episodes

This being said, I highly recommend the albums No New World by Mass of the Fermenting Dregs and Ceres & Calypso In The Deep Time by Candy Claws because they're both amazing albums and they've been scratching an itch in my brain for shoegaze adjacent stuff lately
