I was prepping lancer the other day and I really like how in the setting all the major religions are the same, even if its a lil nonsensical. They still have greek orthodox churches and mosques in the future. It's not "grimdark" of "noblebright", it's just the future and they're exactly like us.

I'm such a sucker for lowkey sci-fi that downplays big genre aesthetics in favor of being some sorta anachronistic modern world, just in the future. The newspapers and trains and little swiss chocolate stores in the Dispossed core, other "atomic era" futurism aesthetics.

Not a game that makes itself easy to run. Definitely gonna need some beating into a differently shaped hole at the table, and if I ran a game idk if I could say it was the systems work. But it's a "functional enough" excuse to write a great mystery session around.

The insertion of the year zero engine is sort of lackluster. It feels like it's missing a lot of what would actually come up, and what it does have you'd have to come up with a reason or situation to use (ie: the combat system in this game where you can't fight the monsters)

Vaesen isn't reinventing the wheel or terribly holistic, hardly the first person to say this. But I like the year zero engine, mysteries are one of my favorite things to run, there are a few cool additions and I love nothing more than prepping a finicky game so I think I'd have a blast.

Very few rpgs are fantasy in the way rpgs are sci-fi: "it's like dune/star wars/trek!". They're not going "it's like moorcock/tolkien/zelda!" They're fantasy because D&Ds fantasy and thats what ttrpgs just are. I want this genre so badly but Im bouncing off reading them so hard for this reason.

I'd genuinely rather it dedicate to having no setting and no flavor and just be like "hey, this is a mechanics toolkit for adventureman fantasy" but its so stuck in the trad game mindset of 1 billion flavor textwalls while also not wanting to do anything fun or interesting with it. A strange book.

The powers stuff is the outlier and its mostly well worded but if your going to spend so much word budget on your worldbuilding make it good, dont have 30 pages of dense text walls telling me a long waffly "well really you shouldn't care about this and do your own thing"

If this was the case I'd welcome it but it's not like it helps in any way. It's a super waffly book, even for a big 400 page ttrpg tome! Even in the powers, they sometimes overlap with flavor description in confusing ways. Its still dedicating tens of pages and thousands of words to the subject.
