After this week's School Board Meeting and additional opportunities for feedback, I am collaborating appropriately with fellow Board Members and staff on a revised version of the 2028-2029 School Calendar that I presented on Tuesday. See images for full statement, and see thread for links. 1/2
Image of text that says 'After this week's School Board Meeting and additional opportunities for feedback, I am collaborating appropriately with fellow Board Members and staff on a revised version of the 2028-2029 School Calendar that I presented on Tuesday. Goals include ensuring 194 contract days for staff and exploring options for at least 1 additional 5-day school week. It is important to me to maintain the inclusive cultural and religious holidays that we have adopted. It has been suggested that we could allow for excused absences on these significant days, as long as tests and field trips do not fall on those school days. Dr. Sumera Rashid Little River District'Image of text that says 'However, if a student misses regular lessons, lectures, or activities on those days, they may not be prepared for assessments when they return to school. Additionally, we must follow VHSL and other guidelines that prohibit sport and activity participation on days when students miss school, regardless of reasoning. We must consider teachers and other staff as well. They may be permitted to miss working days, but per current procedures, they may have to use up their leave to do so. Dr. Sumera Rashid Little River District'Image of text that says 'When it comes to teachers, their classes would need to be covered by substitutes who may not be able to conduct full classes and cover significant material. Also, this would increase budget use for substitute teachers. Of all this would be in addition to student, teacher, and staff absences related to illness, personal emergencies, appointments, and other customary reasons. Dr. Sumera Rashid Little River District'Image of text that says 'I hope to have this revision to share soon, as we plan to vote on this matter at the September 22 School Board Meeting. At any point, I encourage you to continue providing your perspectives. I look forward to hearing from you! Dr. Sumera Rashid Little River District'
