Photo of all five candidates superimposed on a photo of a ballot drop boxImage from the story, highlighting a section about Brown:

A month after the Ward 1 Democrats candidates forum, Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners Rashida Brown and Miguel Trindade Deramo endorsed each other, each telling their supporters to rank the other candidate second on their ranked-choice voting ballot.

Brown said her collaboration with Trindade Deramo came out of mutual respect for their ANC experience.

“We have worked in D.C. government to get things done, both in the Wilson Building and in the community,” Brown told The Informer, “and we know what it means and feels like to answer constituent calls. When folks have a hard time navigating thos services, it’s us that they call. We will be doing the same thing in the Wilson Building.”

By Jasmine Golden"In Ward 1, Brown and Trindade Deramo have formed an alliance over their shared progressive values and experience as ANC commissioners. The two have cross-endorsed one another.

"Brown, whose Ward 1 roots date back to her time at Howard University, has served as an ANC 1E commissioner representing the Park View and Pleasant Plains neighborhoods for more than a decade.

"Brown said she’s witnessed people, particularly Black and Brown neighbors, moving to other wards or out of the District entirely because of child care and housing costs.

"To help combat that, Brown said she is committed to expanding affordable housing, like she did with the Park Morton and Bruce Monroe redevelopment project underway along lower Georgia Avenue NW. She also wants to invest in anti-displacement tools, including fully restoring the Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act that allows tenants a chance to buy their building if it’s for sale."

As a family who plans to live here long term, we're forever grateful for her role in bigger projects, too, like the Kenyon St. bike lanes, Georgia Ave. and crosstown bus priority projects, major housing developments and community green spaces at Park Morton and soon Bruce Monroe Park, plus the positive impact she's had on Lower Georgia Ave. through Hook Hall, Midlands, and other spots. She's also just been the best neighbor we could ask for, and has fostered a connected community of neighbors who know and take care of each other."

I’m committed to prioritizing investments that lead to stability, opportunity, and healing. I’ve done the work already, pushing property owners to revitalize spaces, establishing Georgia Thrive, which replaced graffiti with murals and vacant properties with new businesses.
ON COMMUNITY SAFETY

"Community safety emerges from stability, opportunity, and healing."
Rashida BrownON COMMUNITY SAFETY

WHAT RASHIDA'S DONE

Co-founded Georgia Ave Thrive, which replaced graffiti with murals and vacant properties with new businesses
Worked with MPD to bolster community connections and policing
Advocated for place-based outreach teams to support residents struggling with substance use disorder along business corridors.
Supported evidence-based violence prevention measures in Columbia Heights and Park View.
Graduated from DC’s Community Engagement Academy to learn firsthand about police operations, technology, and crime prevention
ON COMMUNITY SAFETY
WHAT RASHIDA WILL DO

Promote community policing
Fund violence prevention, which is proven to work
Invest in housing, education, rental assistance, Birth-to-Three childcare, youth employment, and mental health crisis teams to address root causes before they lead to safety issues
Oppose youth curfews. Criminalizing young people for existing in public spaces doesn’t create safety–it creates criminal records that destroy futures
Fund safe spaces open late, like rec centers and libraries
Develop youth leadership skills and opportunities

Thank you DC Action & partners for the Youth Issues Forum. Our young people want safe spaces where they can be themselves without being criminalized, real year-round jobs that pay fair wages and access to benefits and support before they turn 18 so they can build stable, independent futures.

I had the honor of touring Mary’s Center and Briya Public Charter School—two incredible institutions right here in Ward 1 that are transforming lives every single day. As a public policy leader in early childhood development, I’ve long believed in the power of integrated, family-centered care.

I really enjoyed meeting with Plumbers & Gasfitters UA Local 5 and touring their pre-apprenticeship facility. As the daughter of a 30-year union member, this visit meant a lot to me. Plumbers and gasfitters do essential work every day—keeping our homes safe, our water clean, and our city running.

A powerful evening with DC labor, engaging with union leaders, friends, fellow DC candidates and community stakeholders in celebration of uplifting our workers. I’m committed to standing with unions, protecting workers’ rights, supporting fair wages, and ensuring safe, dignified working conditions.
