My statement on the ICE shooting in Marble Hill

“Today in Marble Hill, ICE agents fired multiple shots at a man in his vehicle while his 5-year-old child was in the back seat.

ICE's already unwelcome presence in our city has been growing more escalatory and dangerous by the day. Today's shooting is a grave development that requires a swift and immediate response to protect the safety of all New Yorkers.

"First, we must have a full and independent investigation of this incident.

"There must also be a full and immediate release of all body camera footage of the incident.

"In addition, the Target Corporation must stop offering their Bronx properties as private staging sites
for ICE, in compliance with requests from New York officials.

Target opening up large, active retail parking lots for paramilitary activity is unacceptable and places the entire community at risk.
ẠỊICE is a rogue, lawless paramilitary and surveillance agency.

It does not belong in New York City and it should not exist in the United States of America. Abolish ICE."

We are witnessing a comprehensive governmental assault designed to produce fear and terror among millions of men and women who have through their presence in our nation been nurturing precisely the religious, cultural, communitarian and familial bonds that are most frayed and most valuable at this moment in our country’s history.

This assault seeks to make life unbearable for undocumented immigrants. It is willing to tear families apart, separating grieving mothers from their children, and fathers from the sons and daughters who are the center of their lives. It embraces as collateral damage the horrific emotional suffering that is being thrust on children who were born here, but now face the terrible choice of losing their parents or leaving the only country that they have ever known.

The unreasoned tacit endorsement of racial profiling in the Court's order cannot be squared with the Constitution's express prohibition on "unreasonable searches and seizures" or its guarantee of "equal protection of the laws." And the fictional rationale espoused in Kavanaugh's opinion has repeatedly proven irreconcilable with both the law and reality.

Ed was in a fucked up position. He knew it. His typical apolitical stance was being challenged in a way it never had been before. He told me that the words
"Free Palestine" and the image of the Palestinian flag were hurtful to a lot of people he spoke with. I told him that if those words were more offensive than tens of thousands of Palestinian children being killed by Israel, then there was a fundamental disconnect between where those people stood and where I stood. But he couldn't get past his public facing, "I don't take sides”

feeling a bit bad that folks are following me from a philosophy starter pack as I am not a professional philosopher, but rather an amateur (in the sense of lover) anyway this is what I was up to this weekend

We have shown earlier how in the environment which lies closest to us, the public 'environment' already is ready-to-hand and is also a matter of concern [mitbesorgt].

*In utilizing public means of transport and in making use of information services such as the newspaper, every Other is like the next. This Being-with-one-another dissolves one’s own Dasein completely into the kind of Being of 'the Others', in such a way, indeed, that the Others, as distinguishable and explicit, vanish more and more. In this
inconspicuousness and unascertainability, the real dictatorship of the they is unfolded.*

We take and enjoy ourselves as they [man] take pleasure; we read, see, and judge about literature and art as they see and judge; likewise we shrink back from the 'great mass' as they shrink back; we find 'shocking' what they find shocking. The "they", which is nothing definite, and which all are, though not as the sum, prescribes the kind of Being of everydayness. It was shown earlier [p. 71] how, already in each closest circum-world, the public "environment" is at hand and is getting taken care of too.

*In making use of a public means of transportation, in utilizing an information service (newspaper), each of the others is like the next. Such being-with-one-another completely dissolves one's own being-there into the manner in which "others" are, so that others disappear all the more in regard to their differentiation and specificity. Within this incon-spicuousness and indeterminableness, the [impersonal] *one* unfolds its effective dictatorship.*

We enjoy ourselves, seek our pleasures, the way *one* enjoys; we read, see, and judge literature and art the way *one* sees and judges; but then we also pull ourselves away from "the masses” the way *one* pulls oneself away; we find "shocking" what *one* finds shocking.

“Theologically understood, racism is more than a sin. It constitutes a heresy that undermines the very identity of the church.” www.commonwealmagazine.org/gods-nation-...
Theologically understood, racism is more than a sin. It constitutes a heresy that undermines the very identity of the church. Taking form in ideology and systemic exclusion, racism threatens to co-opt Christianity because it offers a powerful anti-Christian narrative about who we are as human beings while invoking Europe's
"Christian heritage." We should be alarmed not only at the physical violence racism provokes, but also at the signs of the re-animated gods of nation and blood. As de Lubac recognized in the 1940s, unless the church embodies visibly what its doctrine proclaims it to be—the visible site of the reunification of a humanity divided by sin
—it fails to be authentically catholic.

this sums it up well for me
James Martin, SJ
@JamesMartinSJ

Since I've been asked this over the last few days and it's being discussed on social media, here's how I understand sympathy, empathy and compassion, all important virtues in the Christian life (and all falling under, as I see it, the larger category of love).

A spiritual director once described these three qualities as follows: sympathy is imagining how "you" would feel in another person's situation (say, living in poverty, facing an illness, losing a loved one); empathy is imagining how *the other person* feels (not how you would feel, but how they in fact feel); and compassion is the willingness to suffer with, or alongside, the other person.

Compassion literally means to suffer (or experience) with. "Pascho" (náoxw) is also where we get the word "Passion."

It reminds me of James Keenan, SJ's helpful definition of mercy: "the willingness to enter into the chaos of another person's life." More basically, we see how God desired to be with us so intimately, and to experience and suffer what we experience and suffer, that God becomes one of us, as Jesus Christ.

Significantly, the Gospels often remind us that when Jesus saw people who were sick, hungry, lost or struggling, he felt it intensely. The usual English translation is "his heart was moved with pity." The Greek is stronger: he felt it in his σπλάγχνον ("splanchnon"), his guts, the seat of emotions for the Hellenistic world.

My sense is that this is what Jesus invites us to experience when we see any kind of suffering: deep sympathy, or a radical empathy, which awakens in us both compassion and the desire to act.

In Catholicism, the Christian nationalist movement has found a trove of riches: intellectual self-justification in postliberal and integralist political theologies; deep pockets in the conservative Napa Institute; and ritual legitimacy and aesthetic capital in Catholicism's liturgical and artistic traditions.

Online, Catholicism has become a ready refuge for young men yearning for a disciplined lifestyle to beat back cultural and social alienation.

Scattered across Berrigan’s writings are references to the ancient Greek war god Mars and to war as the cult of Mars. He writes about the “Martian spirit” animating American politics, derides the atomic scientists who labor at “the forge of Mars,” describes those passively submitting to war as caught in the “hands of Mars” or ground under the “wheels of Mars.”

He turned to the biblical imagery of false gods at once nonexistent and strangely active to make sense of how war seems to have a life of its own, driving individuals and nations relentlessly towards death, even their own death in nuclear conflagration. “Speaking biblically,” he writes, “the warmakers believed in god, the god of war.” Performing the Martian rites, they “evicted their soul, and the machine moved in ... .They marched to the common whip, in time with the military, and made a brave and colorful and glorious thing of sanctioned murder.”

Mars appears too often in Berrigan’s writings to be mere metaphor. It’s his way of describing the religious nature of war and prescribing a method of resistance.

Hunter Biden on the passing of Lindsay Graham: “I will choose to remember the time before Trump. Because I believe in an America after Trump.”
Hunter Biden • @HunterBiden

When I heard about Senator
Graham's death last night, the first thing I thought about was not all the things he said and did in service of Donald Trump. I thought of the time before Donald Trump when he was a brother to Senator John McCain.

A time when senators from different parties could fight about politics and still be friends. A time when a conservative Republican from South Carolina could say of my father: "If you can't admire Joe Biden as a person, you've got a problem. He's the nicest person I've ever met in politics. As good a man as God ever created."

That is the Senator Graham I will remember today. Not because I have forgotten what came after. Because in that memory there is hope. Hope for a country where brothers can fight like hell over policy and still share a meal, and a laugh, and the loss of the people they love.

I will choose to remember the time before Trump. Because I believe in an America after Trump.

The hull deliberately recovering from the periodic roll to leeward was just regaining an even keel, when the last signal, a preconcerted dumb one, was given.

At the same moment it chanced that the vapory fleece hanging low in the East, was shot thro' with a soft glory as of the fleece of the Lamb of God seen in mystical vision, and simultaneously therewith, watched by the wedged mass of upturned faces, Billy ascended; and, ascending, took the full rose of the dawn.
