The rare Research team headed to Georgian Bay to study a newly discovered population of hybrid Phragmites! Working with Georgian Bay Forever and the Smith Forest Health Lab, this research will help distinguish native, introduced and hybrid forms to better inform conservation.

What happens when creativity meets the natural world? Students from the University of Waterloo School of Architecture recently stepped outside the studio and into nature, using natural materials to design and create one-of-a-kind hats.

Week SIX of ECO Camp was full of wildlife and discovery! Campers learned with Moccasin Identifier, explored birds and birdwatching, discovered the world of bees, hiked Ancient Woods, met raptors from Wild Ontario and wrapped up the week with newly hatched baby turtles.

Earlier this summer, our team collected at-risk turtle nests to give the eggs a safer place to incubate. Now, those tiny turtles are beginning to hatch! These little turtles have a big adventure ahead of them, and we’re so happy to see them take their first steps (and swims!) into the wild.

Week 3 at ECO Camp was full of discoveries!. Campers spent the week catching and identifying butterflies, exploring the hidden world of benthic macroinvertebrates, hiking the trails, getting their hands dirty in the gardens at Springbank Farm Hub and meeting some incredible birds of prey up close.

Ticks are active from spring through fall in Ontario. They can carry Lyme disease, so it is important to be prepared when spending time outdoors. When visiting rare, stay on marked trails and wear long sleeves & pants. Use bug spray with DEET or icaridin. Protect yourself & enjoy nature safely.
