The huge distance that whales can communicate at and the lack of much to do except talk suggests that their lives may already be internet-like. Perhaps they even relay messages to reach whales that are more than one network hop away.

Assuming whales are talking, and that they are (at least sometimes) talking about concepts human language can express, we may at some point be able to deform the representation space of a human-language model to align it with a whale-language model. arxiv.org/abs/2405.07987

The Platonic Representation Hypothesis
We argue that representations in AI models, particularly deep networks, are converging. First, we survey many examples of convergence in the literature: over time and across multiple domains, the ways...

I think you would have to give each country their own start date and start them off at the point they actually historically joined the war.

Congress can just disband circuit courts, so if this emerges as a problem it is straightforward to resolve.

This behavior is easily verified independently on open models where we know with certainty that there is not a secret calculator involved.

As I mentioned elsewhere, only a majority is required to remove officers. But the lack of remedies you note is not found in the constitution. It is a later invention of the judiciary.

There’s a tenuous argument that you can’t do this to the President because the Chief Justice has to preside so you have to wait for them to arrive, but (a) if true the Chief Justice could block impeachment by not showing up, which would be silly, and (b) they can just remove the Chief Justice first.

If the House has passed articles of impeachment, 51 senators can convene wherever they want, gavel the Senate into session, and vote to convict and remove from office the impeached officer.

raphus.bsky.social @raphus.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Conviction in the Senate is not by two thirds of the body, it is by two thirds of those present. In theory you only need 2/3 of a quorum, but if you don’t have a full quorum in support the others will leave to deny quorum. Waiting for the whole body to convene before voting is a courtesy.

Not sure we can blame the constitution for Congress giving up on existing. In extremity a bare majority of each house can impeach and remove.

A change in customs would probably be sufficient. There isn’t actually much in the constitution.

Math isn’t a science but is part of the club here. And really is the centerpiece. The reason to drag in physics is because of its heavy math adjacency, and CS of course is not a science but rather the field of math concerning the study of computation.

Actually, because of the special property that 1.0_f * x_f = x_f (provided that x_f is not NaN), I think there is one more such function: f(x) = x, defined on the real-valued floats. So you’ve got f(x) = 0 and f(x) = x, which is like, almost there.
020
raphus.bsky.social @raphus.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Well, there is a float subset that is also a real subset. And there are some functions you can define on that subset such that there are corresponding functions extending those functions on the reals that are differentiable. Specifically, I think, a finite number of constant functions.

Given that an agent cannot consent to any ToS or EULA, there is an unresolved issue that agents *aren’t* customers. Lots of people working on this. But at the moment it’s not at all obvious that if an agent sends you money and the user asks for it back that you get to keep it.

Now, A3.S1 does say that the Judges hold their “Offices”, plural, during good behavior, so one ridiculous but linguistically sound reading is that *any* office granted to a person who is a Judge inherently becomes a life tenure, not just the office of Judge itself.
000
raphus.bsky.social @raphus.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
Now, it’s clear that the person John Roberts *is* a “[Judge] of the supreme Court” with A3.S1 life tenure. But if the office of Chief Justice is some unrelated office he happens to hold simultaneously he could presumably be stripped of it so someone else can have it.
100
raphus.bsky.social @raphus.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
Perhaps this is just some unrelated office whose occupant sits around waiting to preside over presidential impeachments with nothing else to do. That the Chief Justice is on the Supreme Court comes from the Judiciary Act of 1789 and presumably could be changed by act of Congress. 🤔

raphus.bsky.social @raphus.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
For your “dogs can play basketball” consideration: The Constitution does not say that the “Chief Justice” in A1.S3.C6 is an A2.S2.C2 “[Judge] of the supreme Court” rather than an “other [Officer] of the United States”. Or that this office somehow relates to the Supreme Court, or has life tenure.

To the extent that all law is, I suppose. But it is meaningfully unique. Admiralty Law is an actual part of the Judicial Power, while the rest is just a convention, like wearing robes to work.

Courts have had to be able to recognize that a customary law of the sea existed and honor it independent of legislation.
000
raphus.bsky.social @raphus.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
The laws of the sea were recognized as a separate body of law from national law, that (“civilized”) countries participated in via a consensus-based process mediated by courts. Admiralty law is to some extent beyond the Art. 1 Legislative Power and actually part of the Art. 3 Judicial Power.
210
raphus.bsky.social @raphus.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
The court is also only empowered to issue rulings that are correct, as the exercise of the judicial power naturally does not extend to actions not encompassed by the judicial power. This is rarely relevant, but is easy to see through thought experiments. (And occasionally comes up in lower courts.)
010
raphus.bsky.social @raphus.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
For the outcome of the specific case before it, yes. But applicability of the court’s rulings beyond the cases before it is more of a courtesy granted by the other branches of government for convenience rather than an actual power. Case law (except admiralty law) is something of a social fiction.
