Nobody will investigate. There will be 0 consequence for the settlers who were behind the attack. If a Palestinian teenager had done the same, the entire area would have been on lockdown, nearby villages would have been searched, and many people would have been detained. 7/7

The police and army eventually left. The relatives of the driver arrived and took the car. The young Palestinians who had stopped to help also left, and we left. 6/7

A few minutes later, the army showed up. They also inspected the vehicles and asked a few questions. At no point, either the police or the army wrote down what happened to investigate and find the perpetrators of the attack. But they asked for our IDs and took photos of them. 5/7

We filmed them, just to be safe, as they inspected the vehicle and asked the Palestinians some questions. They told us to stop, that we were not allowed to film them. This isn't true but we complied because we didn't want to escalate the situation for no reason. They checked our IDs. 4/7

The young guys were waiting for a relative of the driver to come pick up the car. Though we couldn't do anything and all they were doing was waiting on the side of road, they asked us to stay. Less than 5 minutes later, the Israeli police showed up in a militarized vehicle. 3/7

We went and met a few young Palestinians who had stopped to help the driver. The driver had already been taken away by an ambulance. They told us settlers threw stones at the car, beat up the driver, and then poured sand into his engine. 2/7

After a bit of research I learnt that it started as an initiative of a 19 year old from the settlement of Ariel, who wanted to show that the entire West Bank ("Judea and Samaria") belongs to the Jews. 2/2

The first thing I noticed when I got into the West Bank, compared to last year, is thousands of Israeli flags lining up the sides of every major road. Before, you'd only ("only" of course) see Israeli flags at checkpoints, around military basis, or in settlements. 1/2

Still in Harabat al Naibi. At 6am, a few settlers walked their flock of sheeps just down the hill. They come 3-4 times a day. At times they get closer, even walking into the hamlet. They look to provoke a reaction from residents so they can attack them or call the army. Nothing of the sort today.

I'm staying in the tiny hamlet of Harabat al Naibi in Masafer Yata. Two families live here. Last month, settlers stole all their sheeps in the middle of the night. In the past year or two, there's been settler attacks too. So the families have requested that a few activists stay here every night.

The protest is important because the murderer is actually facing indictment, which is pretty rare: 94% of cases of settler violence against Palestinians are not prosecuted. So it's important to show Israel that people are still paying attention. 4/4

Oh and the few times this government almost collapsed was either unrelated to its treatment of Palestinians (mostly around the military drafts for Ultra Orthodox men) or because Netanyahu's line on Gaza was considered too SOFT by its coalition partners.

Israel's next elections are set for October 27. This means that the Netanyahu government, portrayed by liberal Zionists as "extremist" and unrepresentative of Israel, will be the first government in 50 years to finish its entire term. It doesn't get more representative than that.

It's old news but the radicalization of Israeli society remains shocking to me, perhaps because I see it from up close. Growing up, no one around me called the West Bank "Judea and Samaria". Now my SECULAR relatives in Israel exclusively say Judea and Samaria, and call out people who don't.

In case the weekly images of pogroms and settler attacks weren't enough, a new report by Peace Now and Kerem Navot shows how since 2023 Israel has been de-facto annexing the West Bank.
Key findings of the report include:

*  185 new outposts established.

* 118 Palestinian shepherding communities and shepherding clusters expelled.

* 102 new settlements were established through the legalization of outposts or by granting existing neighborhoods independent settlement status.

* 40,064 housing units advanced in settlements.

* Farm outposts now effectively control more than 1.1 million dunams, including approximately 750,000 dunams seized since the current government took office.

* At least 223 kilometers of new roads opened across the West Bank.

* Settlers took control of at least 11,520 dunams through agricultural cultivation.

* 25,959 dunams declared as state land.

One key myth of Zionism is that in the early 20th century, Palestinians opposed all Jewish immigration to Palestine--or even rejected Jews out of antisemitism. In reality, many Palestinians were initially open to Jewish immigration and only opposed it after the political aims of Zionism became clear
Quote by Musa Kazim Husseini, mayor of Jerusalem, responding to the Balfour Declaration on behalf of one hundred Palestinian Arab political leaders, in 1918:
"We Arabs, Muslim and Christian, always sympathized profoundly with the persecuted Jews and their misfortunes in other countries, but there is a wide difference between this sympathy and the acceptance of such a nation . . . ruling over us."

Reminder that the idea of a boycott targeting *only* Israeli settlements in the West Bank makes no sense. The government subsidizes the development of settlements & collects taxes on economic activity there, and Israeli society as a whole benefits from it. The boycott must be against all of Israel

New rule: anyone who says "Israel has a right to exist" must explain what that means. A right to exist as an ethno-nationalist state? Or as a democratic state for all its citizens? Or as a binational federation? Or as something else? "Israel has a right to exist" is just lazy and unhelpful.

Disagreeing with the logic or strategy of BDS is fine, but it's always too obvious these critics have no understanding of the boycott: we don't claim that all Israelis as monsters, we simply know that Israeli academia is actively complicit in apartheid, and therefore should not be engaged with.
