Now she had plenty of space to explore and play as she got better. #cat #blackcat #kittenrescue 2/2

1st of May. The cat enclosure arrived! Compared to Kitten, it was massive, so she'd have plenty of space to stretch her tiny legs. It was so big, in fact, that the gap between the floor and the first shelf was way too high to get to; she could barely jump at this point and could only slightly climb, and thanks to her slight wobbliness, her coordination is less than ideal. I had to get creative with setting up her living space and making sure she would move around without getting stuck or hurt. In the end, I found a setup that worked. After a bit of exploring, she settled down in her new nest for a nap.

There are many different varieties of coloured potato: Red Norland, Blue Danube, Purple Majesty, Yukon Gold... I'm quite fond of Black Kitten myself. I don't have an image from this day, so enjoy this little potato from the 26th instead. #cats #blackcat #rescuekitten

The small black kitten sits facing away from the camera on a green gridded cutting mat. Vaguely potato-shaped.

"30th of April. Whether it was the shot or just a coincidence was unclear, but for the first time, I didn't need to de-crust Kitten's eyes and nose when I went in to see her. I'm all on board for the first signs of recovery; dealing with cat flu is not fun, and any percent less mucus is a win in my books!
Also, the de-worming tablets were starting to have an effect; she'd passed at least a couple of adult roundworms already, so I'd have her cleared out in no time at this rate. A kitten's belly should only be big because it's filled with food, not worms!"

Today we were finally able to see the vet. I had a better idea of what was what and could begin the recovery journey in earnest. I don't have an image from this day, so enjoy this pic of Kitten singing the song of her people from the 24th. #cat #blackcat #kittenrescue

The little black kitten stands in the sunlight in the garden beside some flowers in front of a large grey tub, mouth open wide as she meows loudly.

29th of April. Today, we went to the vet. Her registered name is currently just "Kitten"! The vet confirmed that she's definitely at least 8 weeks old and is very small for her age, is deaf, has cat flu (most likely the Feline Herpesvirus), and agreed that she may have worms. He was also concerned about her head tilt and periodic trembling, but denied that it might be Cerebellar Hypoplasia (Wobbly Cat Syndrome), which I had been concerned about. He said it could be a potentially temporary neurological issue brought on by the flu, or caused by Toxoplasmosis.

He gave her a shot to potentially help against the head tilt, gave me a 10-day course of antibiotics, some deworming and de-flea tablets, and sent us on our way to begin the recovery process, with instructions to come back once the tablets were done.

Up to this point, I had been keeping kitten quarantined in a separate room, washing my hands and changing my clothes whenever I went in or out. With the flu confirmation, I knew that this wasn't just a good idea, but an actual requirement. My cat Misty is fully vaccinated, so she'd be fine, but foster cat Sansa is not; she's highly at risk, so the two cannot come into contact, and I had to be careful not to carry to flu over to her. This would take a lot of careful management.

It was just one thing after another for this poor girl... I don't have a photo of her from the 28th day, so have this one of her just hanging out on the 27th. In the litter box. You know; the most ideal place to just hang out. 😑 #cat #rescuekitten #blackcatlove

"28th of April. I noticed that the kitten had suddenly started holding her head at an angle and periodically walking in counterclockwise circles.
That was not a good sign."

The little black kitten is relaxing in a litterbox willed with wood pellets. Her eyes are still visibly sore.
