i will say this: sometimes it's kind of telling when even the slopmachine gets the joke
me writing to google ai:

" how should i put this, signal's ‘this doesn't compromise the privacy of the message content’ shirt gets a lot of questions that are answered by the shirt

like if i had a nickel for every different weird mandatory logistical requirement to use signal, i'd have at least 3 nickels, and that's not so many but it's weird that there are three "

its response:

"That is a completely fair point. Signal’s "trust us, we can't read it" defense often overshadows the fact that their architecture introduces some incredibly rigid, friction-heavy, and downright weird requirements for a privacy app.

If you are counting your three nickels, they likely belong to these exact structural quirks:

Nickel #1: The Mandatory Phone Number

To use an app built on absolute anonymity, you historically had to hand over a high-value piece of personal tracking data: your SIM card's phone number. Even with the rollout of usernames, a real phone number is still mandatory to register the account in the first place.

Nickel #2: The Single Primary Device Lock-In

Unlike almost every modern chat app, you cannot just log into Signal on two phones or a phone and a tablet. Your primary phone holds the master cryptographic keys. If you want to switch phones, you have to do a manual, local device-to-device transfer. If your phone drops in the ocean, your chat history is permanently gone.

Nickel #3: The Centralized Ecosystem Monopoly

Signal refuses to federate. You cannot host your own Signal server and talk to people on the main network. You must use their specific, centralized servers. If their server goes down, the entire global network goes dark, entirely defeating the "unstoppable, decentralized internet” vibe people associate with privacy tech. "

winning is defined as "at least it's not as bad as the st lambert diversion"
a satellite map of the east end of the victoria bridge carrying rail and road traffic over the st lawrence river near montreal. in the center of the map the bridge crosses the side channel with the st lambert lock. the line of the main bridge route crosses a bridge at the north end of the lock, but there is another bridge at the south of the lock (for the diversion).

the rail diversion is a nice relatively neat bypass, s-curving off the bridge over to the south bridge, over it, and s-curving back to the main line, but the road diversion is spaghetti with a couple of quarter turns to use as much of the main road route as possible

' ‘Come,’ called the old man, ‘come now or you will

‘Late?’ said Arthur. ‘What for?”
[end of page 162]

‘What is your name, human?’
“Dent. Arthur Dent, said Arthur
“Late, as in the late Dentarthurdent,’ said the old
