I love him! Or her. Little fuzzy jewel can ride on my shoulder all day long. Beautiful photo.

Thanks, that’s very kind. I used a 100mm macro lens. The depth of focus is due to focus stacking.

Love your work! I've made about ten quilts myself but have not tried appliqué yet. Hawaiian is on my list!

I find photographing flowers very uplifting. When I was younger, doing creative work helped me cope. These days it feels much lighter. (I guess it worked?) Passiflora 'Susan Brigham' under UV light.

Hellebores come in some of the loveliest colors. I'm fond of the very black ones but don't see them often.

Ah thank you! I’m still on a quest to get the perfect closeup. The individual flowers are quite small, and cameras aren’t exactly designed for pure UV light. Milkweed flowers sort of remind me of squid or cuttlefish close up.

Rain Hayes @rainhayes.com · 23/09/2026
So lovely - I like the contrast treatment.
001
Rain Hayes @rainhayes.com · 23/09/2026
It is due to the pigments (e.g. chlorophyll fluoresces red), as well as epidermal structures and coatings of different plants. This can make it a little hard to predict which plants will react interestingly with UV. There are so many phytochemical variations, and I am but a humble photographer!
