The subtitle says it’s about “art and censorship” but the article is a cogent overview of our culture more broadly since 9/11. I got a lot out of it.

This comment is beautiful. You are an under appreciated artist.

Surprise fall gift from me to me! I forgot I preordered this after reading an excerpt in the July @harpers.bsky.social . She writes about the problems with trying to use willpower to change one’s self. Very excited to have it!

Am I the only one who rolls my eyes when someone excitedly announces they’re making an existing property “darker?” I like certain things *because* of their tone and I nope out at the prospect of seeing a less-encouraging version.

You are allowed to change your mind. About what you want. About what you believe. About who you want to become. Growth doesn’t owe consistency to the person you used to be. Here’s some poems. 💙💙💙 28 days until we take our country back. #poetry #blueskypoets #writingcommunity #BlueSkyPoetry
A poem about changing your mind when experience teaches you something new, framing growth as learning rather than weakness or inconsistency.

New Information

I changed my mind.

Not because
I was weak.

Because Tuesday
taught me something

Monday
didn’t know.

I refuse
to spend Wednesday

pretending
I didn’t learn it.A poem about giving yourself permission to release an old dream when it no longer belongs to the person you have become.

Old Dreams

You are allowed
to stop wanting

the thing
you once begged for.

That dream belonged
to someone

who hadn’t lived
your life yet.

Thank them.

Then let them
want something else.A reflective poem about growing older, recognizing past mistakes, and finding the courage to admit that experience has changed what you believe.

Wrong

I have been wrong

about people,
about love,
about myself,

with astonishing
confidence.

Growing older
has mostly been

learning to say,

I know better now,

and meaning it.A poem about treating your younger self with compassion without feeling obligated to follow plans made before you had the knowledge and experience you have today.

No Contract

You owe
your younger self

compassion,

not obedience.

They made plans
with half the facts

and called them
forever.

You know more now.

Choose again.

This is the kind of cringe that makes one… actually cringe. (I think my dramatic pause there is really good storytelling on my part.)

Gene Roddenberry was the Zeframe Cochrane we got in Star Trek: First Contact: wonderful, terrible, brilliant, flawed, horny, and a literal hero. Gene Roddenberry was exuberantly human.🍀

III: Blow up the Enterprise IV: Do it without the Enterprise V: The Enterprise is back, and it sucks. One of the many problems this movie had for me.

I think it’s strange how much engagement bait George Takei’s account is posting.

One thing I don’t think Trek has examined is the relentless ambition baked into our culture. What if Harry LIKED being an ensign? What if he didn’t want subordinates whose problems automatically became his problems?

I have wished they let Wesley find this kind of peace. He could have ended up a lieutenant on a Starbase somewhere, collecting and assembling all the exploration data from ships passing through the sector. And happy as a clam.

I hate when all the results are padded with fluff text to force you to click through. “Learn how to do Thing X! Thing X is a handy skill to have when you’re doing Y. Here are three ways to do Thi…”

I use Duck AI in two circumstances. One, if I am looking for the answer to a very niche question that does not appear to be answered by regular search results. Or two, if the regular search results are ALL behind a clickwall, I send AI around the wall.

TIL that “Ad Aspera Per Aspera” is the official motto of Kansas. There’s probably a few people on Bluesky that would find that interesting. Thanks, @harpers.bsky.social

I hated how everything in TV and movies had to turn gritty in the 90s. I guess they were all trying to cash in on Dark Knight and Punisher, but damn, the sun STILL doesn’t rise in DC movies until the denouement.
