Now, the void power. Lace still has lingering void in her from being lost, and after defeating each guardian she can speak with their ghost, who will teach her how to further harness that void. The first one unlocks it, further ones upgrade it

They are programmed to patrol certain areas and prevent other bugs from using void for anything or escaping.

Guardians are bugs that lived and the City of Steel. They were found to be using void for something and slain for it. Their souls were then put into steel constructs along with some standard soul, making them stronger than most.

Guardian of the City of Steel's Residential Complex The Jailor is a mostly artificial steel construct that blocks anyone not permitted from entering the Great Pipes. If someone escapes the complex, he will chase them down and return them to their residence by force. #hollowknight #silksong

You do not have to slay them, but not all of them are as friendly as Irnus. You may talk with some of them, and learn more about the world, but some will be as violent as you. And if slaying these old gods and their pious followers isn't enough, you can always stage a betrayal.
