the skies are clear, with hundreds of stars providing company to those who lay awake underneath the dark of the night. radz-at-han, a lively bustling city of colors and lights, is abnormally quiet. mehryde's meyhane, in particular, only houses a few guests who wanted a quick bite before bed. two of these guests sit in the farthest corner of the room, with only a plate of naan and curry separating them.

the two sat in measured silence, the surrounding busywork of staff drowned out in the stillness. moss minded their own, looking towards the stars while zero consumed her meal. zero was the first to continue the exchange they had, before they decided on resting at mehryde's.

"you said you lost the ability to taste only recently," she speaks, and moss' supposed nonchalance is betrayed by their ears flicking to attention. "do you miss it?"

it was a question that would seem silly to anyone else. who would not mourn the various tastes one could experience, the blessing to not only eat but to enjoy the food they have? yet moss doesn't respond immediately, their brows knitting together as they sit with their thoughts. zero had lived for thousands of lifetimes— the subtleties of cuisine were all but lost on her tongue, this they knew intimately.

"... i suppose." they reply, a slight rise and fall of their shoulders following their words. "it was jarring at first. but over the years, i've grown used to it. losing my sense of taste is nothing if it means i get to live."

the silence hangs over the table once again, their words drifting into the air. zero doesn't react, choosing to return to her daily intake of aether. moss eyes the special order of extra-spicy curry and fresh naan with a pensive expression, mulling over their next course of action in their mind.

"... thinking of replenishing your aether?" comes zero's question, breaking the steady rhythm of subdued conversation. moss' gaze darts to zero, who they could swear they caught smiling if only for a moment. but, perhaps it was the night simply dulling their senses, a mere trick of the light. something like that.

"... i am a bit hungry," they respond quietly, slowly unbuckling one of their gauntlets. the veena meets the voidsent's eyes, a smile tugging itself across their face. "thank you, zero."

the hat beside them tipped low, a signal for moss to eat their share of the curry. going forward, not another word was spoken between the two for the rest of the evening.
