This month marks the 30th anniversary of the classic game, Sakura Wars. In a society that assumes everyone must be straight and cisgender, it’s not uncommon for dating sim games like these to be assumed to be for straight guys hoping to win the hearts of a cute girl character. But what about the anime girl’s own hearts and desires? As a queer gamer based in Japan,  I explore the ways in which lesbian relationships are baked into gaming systems and their significance for my community.
