We also heard stark evidence of the human impacts of pollution from Flaviano Bianchini @source-int.bsky.social, including how coarse dust generated by mining operations accumulates in the lungs of school children living near mining sites in the DRC.

Panellists looked at the role of science and data in supporting legal action and advocacy, the importance of recording regular baseline environmental data, and why companies should be compelled to publish Environmental Impact Assessment reports.

London is sweltering – and with it comes the question of air pollution and clean cities. But what about the locations in which transition minerals are being mined? For London Climate Action Week of 2026, we co-organised a panel titled ‘From Science to Justice' hosted @leigh-day.bsky.social ⬇️

It must also be about fairness and accountability. A truly sustainable future means ensuring that the people living in the locations powering the green transition are not the ones paying the highest price. #EarthDay2026

The DRC is the world’s largest producer of cobalt, accounting for roughly 70% of global supply, and it is one of the world’s leading copper producers. As demand for copper wiring and rechargeable batteries accelerates, Earth Day shouldn’t just be about 'net zero' climate ambitions. ⬇️

If the UK is serious about a #JustTransition, it must do more to confront financial & political systems that allow environmental abuse to continue. RAID is pleased to support recommendations in the Clean & Green Manifesto on how the UK’s anti-corruption efforts can help tackle environmental harm.👇

Polluted waterways are a continuing legacy of the company’s mining activities. The EPA found that levels of arsenic and cyanide exceeded legal limits. Villagers say pollution has destroyed fishing livelihoods and caused serious health concerns. Explore the testimonies at the link above.

Local residents say mining has left communities with poisoned rivers, damaged homes and crops destroyed by elephants displaced by deforestation. Bea Mountain exported more than $500m worth of gold in just 18 months. Meanwhile, local people report violent crackdowns during protests.

The DRC holds more than 70% of global cobalt reserves and is emerging as a key strategic partner for the US. But lawyers and human rights defenders inside the country warn the deal prioritises geopolitics over human rights, arguing that the agreements have been negotiated in "total opacity".
