Also LepiLED can run off mains using a USB socket on three pin mains plug. There are several different models available but the best compares with 125W MV so a less powerful one should approximate to 80W MV.

LepiLED is very good and compares with 125W MV. It is pricey but runs at no more than 12.5W and comes with USB-A connnection and is powered from 5V powerpacks. Several different models are available and can run on pure UV LEDs or with colour LEDs as well that match peak frequencies moths come to.

I saw my first Saltmarsh Knot-horn Ancylosis oblitella at Dungeness in 2019, one at Titchwell in 2025 and fourteen scattered round Herts this year. Herts has to be the most ironic of those by a long way🙂

Last night was breezy and cool and so no surprise when moth numbers were down and not a single Small Mottled Willow anywhere. However, this Dusky Knot-horn was an unexpected treat. @migrantmothuk.bsky.social
Dusky Knot-horn Pyla fusca, definitely not on Heathland or Moorland in Tring.

Excellent record, but would you swap it for a Striped Hawk-Moth?🙂

Last night I checked the moth traps before going to bed & saw NFG Plumed Fan-foot on a wheelie bin. I was pleased with that. This morning Jersey Tigers were everywhere but few other species. Small Mottled Willows and a Dark Sword-grass & then turned over an egg box! @migrantmothuk.bsky.social

I have one Red Underwing, but Clifden Nonpareil I have had twice making it my most numerous so far. Herts has had one record of Rosy Underwing in 1927, so I look forward to hosting the second record😂

Then on opening the trap properly I saw a second Catocala and thought it must be another Dark CW, but it wasn't! This beats my first Clifden Nonpareil in my garden as that was my third one that week in 2021🙂

I'll admit that when I first looked through the clear plastic I thought I was looking at an odd Black Arches, as a Crimson Underwing was not on my radar. Then I saw it flap about and went headless chicken. I carefully potted a Dark Crimson Underwing, closed the trap and carried on counting ....

I was pleased with my first Small Mottled Willow for my garden back in May. So six on 9th July would have been amazing. However, they were eclipsed by a Dark Crimson Underwing and Light Crimson Underwing at the same time. I briefly thought Tring had moved to the coast😁

Also I think the College Lake/Wilstone Res bird is 2CY and the Surrey bird is older.

Given the winds I agree and think Hampshire/Surrey are the closest realistic potential origins, but further afield must also be a possibility. Optimistic for tonight🤞

Very nice David, I am not holding my breath for one in my garden. They are rare in Herts, lack of heathland etc.

Last night was looking fairly boring in Tring, Herts until this worn moth was found in the last trap. I am hoping this is a Portland Ribbon Wave. A potential county first for Herts
