Planning a freshman seminar course on “natural history” broadly defined. Focusing on science but also dipping into philosophy, art, poetry, fiction etc through the ages. What readings should 100% be in there? Photo is a small sample of what I’m considering

Same with having strong laws, anti discrimination laws etc

NYC rent is astronomical ofc but it feels great to have such strict rental laws here, and an enforcement system that’s at least somewhat responsive, tho ive never needed it. I feel v protected. It just lightens one of those low level but constant anxieties of living in this world

Three days ago, the far-right came very close to winning Brazil's presidency, and probably soon will. Today, there's an emu on the loose in Rio's streets. Coincidence?

I've mentioned that thought experiment to students many times! Usually to blank stares

Fire alarm went off right as I was lecturing about instinctive vs learned behavior. I jumped and flinched SO HARD it was the perfect example of an instinctive behavior. I canceled class and will excuse related Qs from the exam, but I bet they'll never forget about instinct!!!

When students were attacked by cops in the México City protests of 68, UNAM’s Rector - Javier Barros Sierra - stayed silent for fear of jeopardizing university funding. Just kidding. He ordered all flags to 1/2 mast, led 80,000 down Av. Insurgentes, & gave an epic speech defending free expression

I mean i was thinking of things i *normally* eat. If we’re talking things i’d *try*, i bet jellyfish (minus the cnidocytes) tastes very delicate and pleasantly salty, and marine annelids must not be too different from squid and octopus

Yeah paying 100s out of pocket for this is unacceptable. And no worries, they were a cool resource but i can live without them! For now i (with chatgpt) just wrote simple scripts in R to make plots to show in lecture and that’s fine!

Excellent q from a student: do so called “living fossils” like the coelacanth have lower mutation rates? I told him my gut feeling is no, but i feel like there’s actual research on that/wondering if that’s also other’s gut?

By that reasoning, is anything a trait? All “traits” are the complex and contingent outcomes of genetic, developmental and environmental causes, and made up of multiple separate parts. That doesn’t stop us calling them traits.
