You read our minds 😏 we'll share more soon!
Sneak peek at something the Bluesky team is working on. Screenshot shows the Bluesky app with the drawer open, with a new drawer menu item called "Atmosphere (Beta)". The content to the right shows what an activity feed of stuff happening in the Atmosphere might look like. All content is WIP, we'll share more soon.

We want to make it easier for creators to link out and attract financial support, so we're exploring a new feature that lets you add links on your profile. They show up as buttons under your bio.

We're deploying a fix for this now. It should be working as intended in about 30 minutes (notifications for replies in a thread should respect the block relationship in the branch where the reply happened). LMK how it goes, and thanks for the feedback.

Hey 👋 we're looking for feedback on the language selector in the post composer. The way it current works is that if you switch languages and create the post, we save your last selection for next time. Would y'all prefer that, or have it reset to your primary language for each new post?

Oh, yep, I am doing that.

Ironic because I literally can't (threadgated), but @eboldy.bsky.social: it is a feature, not a limitation. We intentionally designed it to be that way for possible privacy concerns. Could allow picking when adding people to the group? Something we could iterate on in the future. @alexbenzer.com

Encouraging for someone who is right now doing something that scans all the likes.

This allows us to move forward on the product side while the protocol side catches up. The important thing is that, wherever it makes sense (and DMs might be one of the very few cases where it _does not_ make sense), we have migration paths to in-repository permissioned data, once it is shipped.
020
rafael @rafael.my · 29/07/2026
That's not really the main reason for it. DMs themselves are not public. They are "protocol-shaped" data, but not "on-protocol". That's the thing in your highlight: all data _in repositories_ is public. DM data doesn't live in the PDS repositories, but on a traditional backend app.

Just please aim carefully when you release the spider web

rafael @rafael.my · 25/06/2026
2. I was about to report it wasn't going to my PDS, but to bsky.social. Then I realized I was filling in my handle and clicking on "Login with bsky.social" instead of "Login" (which I didn't even see initially). Could maybe just separate them a bit more. I've seen other apps with a clear separation.

Trying it out, a couple of nits. 1. The contrast in the input field is bad (I wrote my handle on the image, in case you miss it). I'm on the latest Firefox, system theme is dark.

I confirmed with @ds.bsky.team, it is the bug I described above. We're working on a fix, should be rolled out within the next few days!
010
rafael @rafael.my · 25/06/2026
@ds.bsky.team Is there a chance you are conditionally showing the button based on the first page of chat requests, instead of doing it conditionally on the count? This could explain Dan's experience.

rafael @rafael.my · 25/06/2026
Let me understand this exactly: 1. You have a dot on the "Chat" nav item. 2. You have "1 request" like in my screenshot above, on the left. 3. You DON'T have the button to mark all requests as read. Is that it? If so, this is probably a frontend bug.
110
rafael @rafael.my · 25/06/2026
Hey Dan, please try this and LMK if it fixes it: bsky.app/profile/rafa...

rafael @rafael.my · 25/06/2026
Lastly, if you still see a persistent dot, you probably have unread chat requests. On the chat page, click on the "Requests" tab (left on the image) and then on the button to mark them as read (right on the image).

There is an alternative school of thought by which I suck because I caused it, but I like your way of thinking.
110
rafael @rafael.my · 24/06/2026
It would be the same as opening each one of the ones that appear as unread. Do you have many chat requests? Like, multiple pages if you scroll down? Do you see any unread ones?
110
rafael @rafael.my · 24/06/2026
Hi Josh and Josh. I believe you have unread chat requests. Can you please try clicking on the "Requests" tab (left on the image) and then on the button to mark them as read (right on the image)?
130
rafael @rafael.my · 24/06/2026
Yeah, sorry about that. I believe you should be able to fix that with the long press on the mobile app (it should show you the option to clear chat requests).
010
rafael @rafael.my · 24/06/2026
Hmmm, yeah, I don't know. Can you try the "mark all as read" thing? We just released it on web as well.
110
rafael @rafael.my · 24/06/2026
We just rolled it out for web
230
rafael @rafael.my · 24/06/2026
It is out
120
rafael @rafael.my · 24/06/2026
Ok, I don't know what's causing it. I will check when we deploy "mark all as read" thing to web and ping you back here.

rafael @rafael.my · 24/06/2026
That's good feedback, I'll pass it along to the team.
110
rafael @rafael.my · 24/06/2026
If you only have the blue circle, and no number, it means you have unread "chat requests". Can you check it by clicking on this button?
100
rafael @rafael.my · 24/06/2026
The counts should exclude unreads from deleted accounts. Is it not working for you?
100
rafael @rafael.my · 24/06/2026
I'm with you on this, but I've heard some people are actually nice to talk to, so maybe them.
070
rafael @rafael.my · 24/06/2026
Long press means click and hold, yes. On desktop, it is not rolled out yet, sorry about that. We will roll that out soon, though. If you feel strongly about marking that as read meanwhile (and you don't have that many chats), you could try scrolling down and finding the unread and opening it.
241
rafael @rafael.my · 24/06/2026
You have to limit the resolution at some point. Could have been 100+, 1000+, we thought that after 30+ you don't really care about the exact number and just think of it as "a lot".
040
rafael @rafael.my · 24/06/2026
Yeah, hopefully this is what you mean: bsky.app/profile/esb..... If not, LMK.
010
rafael @rafael.my · 24/06/2026
I actually think the client code counts +1 when you have unread requests (it doesn't add the unread requests count, just 1). In this case, I had 1 unread convo and 1 unread request, so it shows 2. But if I read the unread convos, it shows just the dot, no matter how many unread requests we have.
010
rafael @rafael.my · 24/06/2026
The second is capped at 11 ("more than 10"), but only shown as a dot, and only if the first count is at 0. I would call this just a badge. About the counts being imprecise, do you mean the fact that they are capped at 31|11? Or do you see them behaving imprecisely even within those boundaries?
210
rafael @rafael.my · 24/06/2026
The way I see it, there are 2 different things. There is the "unread accepted convos count" and the "unread request convos count". The first is shown as a count, but it is capped at 31 on the UI and on the API (31 meaning "more than 30"). I would call this an "unread count", not sure if you agree.
110
rafael @rafael.my · 24/06/2026
... on the implicit behavior that "if you didn't read this for a while and had more conversations that pushed this down, we eventually stop factoring that unread to show the badge", which was never desired.

rafael @rafael.my · 24/06/2026
Thanks for the feedback, ændra. A few things to unpack, I will try to reply to each message. --- About this one. Yeah, we didn't fully consider that this would happen. It was more of a "the old way is incorrect, let's fix it" approach, not realizing some people might be inadvertently relying ...

rafael @rafael.my · 24/06/2026
Also, if this doesn't appear on your app, it is probably not up-to-date.
100
rafael @rafael.my · 24/06/2026
This _should_ fix all cases. But maybe we have a bug around that? I don't know. If you encounter this issue and this doesn't fix it for you, please let me know here.

rafael @rafael.my · 24/06/2026
We have a way of marking all conversations as read, which should fix the "ghost notification". You long press the chat icon on the bottom nav and these options will appear. But it is only on the iOS and Android apps for now (we might add it on web in a different place).
393
rafael @rafael.my · 24/06/2026
We've got reports of users seeing "ghost notifications" and not having a way of marking them as read, because they don't see the conversation on the list. My investigation leads me to conclude that it is there, but maybe you'd have to scroll to find it (there's a better way).
140
rafael @rafael.my · 24/06/2026
Which are those in a separate tab inside the chat page, that you haven't accepted yet. The difference is that chat requests, on their own, don't show a counter, only the dot on the chat menu.
140
rafael @rafael.my · 24/06/2026
But not on the new system. So you might have started seeing the unread badge in you chat but you don't immediately see the unread conversation on the list. What it probably means is that you have buried down in the pagination some old unread convo. Note the same also applies to "chat requests".
160
rafael @rafael.my · 24/06/2026
After: we actually try to find up to 31 unread convos, even if they are not within the 31 most recently messaged convos. This means that if you had a convo you never bothered to open to mark unread, and it got buried by newer convos, on the old system it would eventually stop showing the badge.
170
rafael @rafael.my · 24/06/2026
About unread chat badges on the nav bar. We recently changed how chat unread counts work. Before: we would get the 31 (IIRC) most recently messaged convos and see if there were any unreads among them.
