ok, but is it because we get so much practice? I've had lots of streets that were open with orange cones surrounding the car lane, and the bikepath symbol or pedestrian symbol is crossed out. Blocking cycle paths seems like a routine first step in a construction project.

"GE Evolution" locomotives are diesel-electric... like every locomotive since 1960? They just have better emissions than previous generations. Technology is not fundamentally different, and they don't plug in.

Most trucks are already at >= 800V, but with proprietary batteries. the worldwide agreed standards is MCS for charging which is already agreed to 2MW rate, rather than battery swapping.

great so EV's are "Commercial now"... EV sales in Canada are 5% of total vehicle sales. That chart shows when commercial viability starts, not when adoption is broad. It will take 30 years for the transition to happen. Pipelines could be ready in 5.

CATL presents, and somebody buying are two different things. Besides you keep talking about Europe jumping ahead... by buying Chinese tech? Enough with the CATL herding.

2/ Trains though... trains in China are electric, with overhead lines, which is the right way to do it. Nobody is seriously considering Battery electric for long distance trains.

1/ I never said anything about heavy trucks. Heavy trucks are going electric, currently at about 6% in Quebec. CATL indeed has a battery swapping plan that I think SCANIA has bought into in Europe.

trains are diesel-electric: true but irrelevant. The best way to electrify, as is done in Europe, is with overhead lines, rather than batteries that rob the trains of cargo capacity. There are no plans to run battery electric trains anywhere at the moment. won't happen.

OK, but they are not on track for that. Serve the market that exists.

If you send crude to Ontario, Quebec, or NB... folks have the opportunity to do upgrading at any point.

2/ yes the market for burning fossil liquids will shrink, but having a cheap source for what you need to make carbon fibre and plastics is a great enabler for local industry forever.

1/ yes, use will shrink. The first question is whether in that shrinking future, is it better for Europe to be buying from Russia, the middle East, or Canada? Why throw money away?

ships that cross oceans will not be electric for the foreseeable. Freight trains in North America are entirely Diesel. To convert heavy vehicles in North America to Electric, need MCS charging network. There are currently zero deployed. Sure, will come, but a decade or two.

Canada is well provisioned to fight on biologics. We have adequate research and production facilities. It's the same thing that is useful for viruses. Covid was helpful in that regard. Can always do more, but not a current weakness.

France is about to make Marine LePen their president. Hold onto your tuque. We need our own, independent nuclear deterrence, because no-one can or will be willing to save us.

3/ Open source everything is a good idea, including designs for physical parts, so replacements could be 3D printed. Canada, lacking major brands, could participate in an Open Gizmo Revolution. Would be a good thing. Still, it would be based on Euro standards.

2/ Outside North America, the rest of the world either bases its standards on, or wholeheartedly adopts European ones. China's and India's standards are similar/compatible/sometimes identical to European. There is no conflict. China makes stuff for the European market also.

Un n'exclut pas l'autre. You can do both. It would be a good thing, but there is a lot available even if we do major upgrading locally.

4/ The whole reason Europe is STILL importing O&G from Russia is because they still need it. If Canada could export from the east coast (or Churchill) it would make the war in Ukraine much shorter.
000
individual271828 @radicallymoderate.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
3/ Trains, heavy trucks are zero % electrified for now. It will take decades. And even if there is no local demand, export is a good reason for the pipeline.

individual271828 @radicallymoderate.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
2/ Quebec's electricity is 99% renewable, but over 40% of energy is from fossil fuels. Most greenhouses are heated with natural gas. Can't transition to quickly and be uncompetitive.
110
individual271828 @radicallymoderate.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
1/ They're already building the pipeline from Alberta, north of the great lakes to get to Sarnia. From there, Line 9 takes it to Quebec, at least as far as Levis. That's good enough for Crude Carriers. Ideally continue to Irving/Saint-John.

he's not actually selling arms to Ukraine... PURL has basically died, even though trump was getting a markup on every sale. He is not playing both sides at all. He is on Russia's side, pure and simple.

individual271828 @radicallymoderate.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
2/ The US mostly pays a discounted price, where China pays full world price, which is why Canada would prefer to sell to China, and the pipeline is full. Just being able to sell a little from our west coast has made reduced the discount on oil sold to the US. We need more pipelines east and west.
200
individual271828 @radicallymoderate.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
1/ exports of crude to China have gone from basically zero to about 10%... so the relative increase since the new pipeline was put in place is basically infinity... but it is still a small amount compared to the 85% that is still exported to the US.

I have a velomobile, and I use the lanes sometimes also. I live out in Vaudreuil. I had planned to use it to commute to Dorval (30km/each way) but covid hit, and then I retired. It's a lovely thing, like a Ferrari in my garage. A lot of barriers I can't handle though.

The US is next door, and about 1/5th of the world's GDP. Would it be better for everyone, cheaper, and more efficient for us to trade with eachother? yup. Is that on offer? nope. So we will trade with the other 80%. The US made that choice, not us. We just have to deal with it and move on.
000
individual271828 @radicallymoderate.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
When Canada signed FTA in the 1980's US GDP was around half of the world. Today it is about one fifth. so it's proportion of world GDP is less than half what it was. Can we replace our trade with 20% of the world by trading more with the other 80%? It's not cope, it's just math.

Canada won´t go bankrupt, because the US is not that big a deal. There is nothing the US sends to us that we can´t get from somewhere else. We just will buy from others, and sell to others. It will make stuff more expensive for you, and more expensive for us. We will be fine.

The question for democrats is: where do they want to sell their cars? Canada is the biggest market for US cars, and it´s bigger than the next 5 combined. What´s a smart tariff on your biggest customer?

Criminal Code, R.S.C. 1985, c. C-46, s. 423(1)(g). It makes it an offence, in specified circumstances, to “block[] or obstruct[] a highway.” ... with the purpose of compelling someone to stop doing something they have a lawful right to do.

It is not a brake check if you pull onto the curb blocking the vehicle in front. That looks a lot more like criminally blocking a roadway, liable to 5 years.

No. It's because the cities (Mtl, Gatineau, Sherbrooke) voted Liberal and Conservative (Quebec City) and all the PQ votes are rural. The people complaining about TGV are farmers between the cities. It's pure electorialism.

"We've heard from California Governor Gavin Newsom that these tariffs and the way the United States is treating Canada is not going to change just because Trump left the Whitehouse" ... Carney's making other plans... it's the right thing to do. US Exceptionalism is everywhere down there.
