god i need to stop trying to give eric larocca a chance because i know i’m not gonna have a good time, but they are one of those authors i desperately want to understand the appeal of and at this point i don’t think i ever will.

about 2/3 of the way through the daughters' war and it's making me wanna read the blacktongue thief again. i need to buy both of these books so i can make other people read them like i do with between two fires.

one thing about christopher buehlman is that he is going to write a death scene that is simultaneously so so simple but also insanely emotionally potent and you're gonna sit there like 😟 the whole time

jason @radialhowl.bsky.social · 30/03/2025

about 3/4ths of the way through the blacktongue thief and i really really appreciate christopher buehlman's ability to write ensemble-ish casts and the worldbuilding for this story. i think this is in second place behind between two fires for my favorite works of his.

the like ass backwards underlying thesis of "all men are innately evil EXCEPT trans men who are uwu special because they Get women and are incapable of perpetuating misogyny" is kind of what's the biggest sticking point to me. like way to go you are also invalidating your trans protag's gender.

other readers that are also haters are out here losing their minds over shit like fourth wing and haunting adeline. not me. i've been writing an essay about how bad the spirit bares its teeth is because i have so much to say. 2000 words so far and i'm not even halfway through all my criticisms.

110

jason @radialhowl.bsky.social · 23/02/2025

still trying to slog through the spirit bares its teeth because i love tormenting myself

jason @radialhowl.bsky.social · 07/02/2025

i'm personally ambivalent towards the inclusion of trigger lists in novels, but i feel like the recent trend of authors printing A LINK to their trigger warnings completely undermines the entire point of having them in the first place.

reading the necromancer's house as a reprieve from The Other Thing i'm kind of suffering through and once again getting to appreciate buehlman's ability to write some of the worst people you know but also manage to make them charming in a way

i would like to celebrate david lynch by sharing maybe my favorite thing he ever did … a comic strip. www.lynchnet.com/angrydog/

screenshot of the first two panels of the angriest dog in the world. first panel: the dog who is so angry he cannot move he cannot eat he cannot sleep he can just barely growl bound so tightly with tension and anger, he approaches the state of rigor mortis

second panel: the dog strains on his leash outside a house (this is every panel in the strip, but there is dialogue coming from the house in following panels)

David Lynch's passing calls me to recall "The Perfect Drug," written for Lynch's Lost Highway, a personal NIN fave, though I'd not ever seen the video for it, it's amazing in a real "More goth, no, more goth than that, what part of 'more goth' do you not understand" sort of way youtu.be/dn3j6-yQKWQ
