Storing energy from solar to power the night makes sense in lots of places already, and yeah will just grow. A home owner installing a battery to buy off peak power for use during peak rates, I think will never be efficient.

I don't even know if this is a savings, even if you ignore the cost of the hardware and installation. Every time you convert power you lose a good bit of it.

Is this a whole game based off that werner herzog documentary scene where the penguin leaves the here to walk off in some random direction, as if mysteriously called, to its own inevitable demise?

More papers than books but in the critical race theory class, "White by Law" was really excellent. For piracy anything by Markus Rediker. We read "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea". Econ development stuff didn't have any books that I remember, and that entire field is hotly contested

And then you can have an exogenous shock that overwhelms state capacity and leads to famine/civil war and then often a refugee crisis. It's wild how many of these things spread out over time and place are still all bound up in one another.

And my undergrad degree focus was on international development. Which is a lot of learning about the history of western intervention and it's impacts. From building caste systems to getting countries plugged into international markets (which is maybe net positive until there is a global price drop)

Cool, I just ordered the two books I see in it. I've taken courses on critical race theory (well it was Race, Gender, and the Law), the civil war, and even a history class about Atlantic pirates (this is way more of a labor/class story than I realized)

Yeah this is exactly what a history class should be! Memorization is boring but the context of how we got to where we are is really everything. Sounds awesome.

History classes are one of those things I didn't start to really appreciate, beyond the novelty of knowing stuff, until I was in my 30s. Then the saying about past being prelude really clicked. Damn shame about the contents of our prelude. What is the course title?

Sorry for my slow reply! I think (what I know about you at least) is awesome! And I admire a lot of the work you've done and I'm always interested in what your views are. Those sound like extremely long days but hopefully catching games still is a good sign and not burnout fuel!

Right. There are mountains of lore but a movie similar to the story in the game itself would be like 80s fantasy action schlock

I also work at a university that paid lots of tariffs on federal research grants. Many of those projects have since come to an end. If we get refunded it will need to be returned to the sponsor and just forever lowered what was available for research

We looked into some of this where I work a few years ago and ended up instead spending that money on far more panels in an adjacent field

radbeard.bsky.social @radbeard.bsky.social · 12/04/2026
Installing solar on rooftops is a lot cheaper then building lots of rooftops just for solar. The expense of building so many weight bearing structures starts to get more pricey than the panels themselves.

Mythos isn't AGI and the security vulnerabilities it found could likely take down all the power grids in the world and infect every computer. You don't need AGI to be wildly valuable and capable. There is very real ability here and so it will be developed

There are lots of dumb things the models do and I watch the funny YouTube shorts, but I think we do ourselves a disservice by thinking that stuff is permanent.
100
radbeard.bsky.social @radbeard.bsky.social · 11/04/2026
Energy grids, banks, you name it, suddenly a LOT is vulnerable. And an arms race that takes place in this arena at the scale and speed LLMs allow for is genuinely frightening

radbeard.bsky.social @radbeard.bsky.social · 11/04/2026
Vibe coding is good or bad depending how it's implemented. Lots of implementations are going to create long term problems, but those are solvable problems. But I don't just mean security detection. Something like mythos means random people have access to state level cyber hacking tools.

I don't know the future and I'm not saying it will be the only technology humans ever create again, but a lot of folks think it's going away because datacenter rollout isn't matching the earlier claims, like in the OP. It's not going away, and it's going to rapidly expand.

radbeard.bsky.social @radbeard.bsky.social · 11/04/2026
I've advocated for delaying adoption of AI products where I work, and I think at least the current gen products in my industry are marketing hype. But a llm designed drug is in human trials presently and that was with models from years ago. Mythos' security vulnerability detection is a seashift.
